Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Am I the only one whose Pedi recommended waiting to start solids?

I was just curious about this. It seems like a lot of pedi's on here are recommending starting solids at 4 months.

I had been planning on waiting until 6 months, and my pedi confirmed this at the 4 month appointment earlier this week. My DS was 15 lbs 14 oz (up nearly 10 pounds from his birth weight) and has a huge appetite. But she said he is obviously thriving on BM, so to keep on keeping on for now.

  • She told us a this 4 month to wait until he could sit better on his own. Which he does so we're starting tomorrow (which will be 6 months).

  • I told my pedi I wanted to wait until 6 months and she said that was great.

  • Nope.  My pedi recommends waiting also.

He also always says "are you still bfing?" "Yes" "You deserve a gold star."

And he thinks the concept of STTN is the silliest thing in the world.  He told me the last time "if you get up to pee at night or shift around in bed, then why would you expect your baby not to get up at all?"

    lol

  • Nope, our pedi was pretty adamant about recommending no sooner than 6 months. We'll see what they say at his 4 month appt (DS has reflux so perhaps they'll want to start him sooner?).

  • Nope, my pedi and the AAP recommends not starting until 6 months.  And my boy is already over 18lbs and he is doing fine without solids.

  • Nope.  Ours advised us to wait too.

  • Our pedi stated that research indicates children who start solids at 6 months or after have a more difficult time adjusting to different tastes and textures which is why she follows the AAP recommend of BETWEEN 4-6 months. Not AT 6 months and after.

This is probably more of pedi's personal opinion and reference than a medical reason.

Do what is right you and your family is my motto.

  • I don't go until Monday but he said we will discuss solids at your next appointment, so I'm assuming he'll evaluate him and give us the go-ahead.
  • we are waiting til 6 months. although my MIL finds this incredible. she thinks he'll starve on bm.

  • Most pedi's recommend waiting until 6 months. But if they grab the spoon out of your hand or stare you down for your sandwich, they are usually ready.

(I am a huge fan of waiting 6 months. My kids had to hit me over the head to get me to give up the cereal at 4 and 5 months. I'm one of those "No peanut butter until 3" Moms. But I have a husband who is lean and eats every 2 hours, and both of my kids seem to follow in his footsteps.)

  • ours said 6 months and really urged us to wait.

    I love this!!!

  • Mine usually follows the wait till 6 months rule, but it depends on the baby. We wanted to wait but DS was diagnosed w/ reflux & also started nursing ALL. THE. TIME. He had also started staring us down when we ate & trying to grab our food.

All I can say is kiddo seriously digs cereal. And the piece of banana he tried to grab out of my hand & shove in his mouth yesterday.

  • My pedi recommended we wait until closer to 6 months which is what we planned on doing anyways.

Same with us. We had her 4 month today. She is only at about 30 oz a day and said she was fine up to 36 or so.
