Do you use your changing table?

I'm trying to decide if i should get one.  We are not going to have a dresser in the room for a few years since the room is on the small side and we are getting a glider there really isn't much room for it.   We have a huge Built in and a closet and were going to do a closet organizer in it.

Does any one have any suggestions on what to use if we don't buy one?  I'm just wondering if it's worth it 150.00 for something you might use for 2 years.  I have been looking for a use one but, have had no luck.

Re: Do you use your changing table?

  • if you have a low dresser, then I don't think you would need a changing table.

I will say that I use our changing table all of the time but I would use a dresser top the same amount.  They have some cute diaper caddy things that you'd put on top for changing times.

I also used the bassinet portion of the PNP as a changing table in the living room so I wasn't always having to go back to the nursery.  I had a csection so it was really nice not having to walk too much around for diaper changes when I was in the living room.

  • We used it up until a month ago.  DD hates it up there, so I change her on the floor.  It's much easier to get her dressed at the same time and she is much happier.  I think she feels less "stuck". Plus it's funny when she gets away and her little buns move a mile a minute!
  • We just put a changing pad on the top of the dresser, we have a small nursery as well and needed to save space.
  • I have a low dresser with the changing pad on top. I put a bookshelf right beside it top put the diaper supplies on. It works beautifully. I too could not reason buying a seperate changing table.

  • I use mine all the time for everything from diaper changes to putting up her hair & dressing her.

Having said that,  IKEA has some that are really cute & a couple of them fold up when you're not using it.

ETA: Mine is also a dresser. It's the Davinci Kalani Changing table with 3 drawers under it. It's pretty small since M's room is pretty small right now.

  • i responded on sal but to add to that, i see you are having a little boy. we had 3-4 diaper changing caddys/pads around the house when we brought him home and were only able to change him on the PNP when he was small enough and the changing table. little boys pee EVERYWHERE and ALL THE TIME. after he peed on our ottoman/floor/bed a few times, we learned our lesson, it just wasn't safe to try changing him anywhere but those areas that were easily cleaned up.
  • I use mine all the time. For changing, dressing her, fixing her hair...It's definetly something that was worth it for us.
  • we have one upstairs in the girls room and one downstairs in our dining room and I use them all the time...we started with just the one upstairs, but having one downstairs turned out to be a lifesaver just as a place to keep all things baby and also for our backs - DH and I are tall people and bending over the pack-n-play basinet was killing me...
  • We have the changing pad on top of her dresser in her nursery and use this to change diapers and dress her at night.  We use the PNP with the changing table attachment to change and dress her the rest of the time since this is in our family room where we spend most of our time.

  • We don't have one, but we use the top of the dresser with a changing pad. We use it all the time, several times a day. If you put a built-in in the closet, could you make a low section with no shelves above it (for a few feet at least) that could be used as a changer inside the closet? Then later it still doubles as a shelf.

  • I couldn't justify a piece of furniture we'd have no use for after a couple of years either, so instead, I bought a low antique dresser with a mirror and just put a changing pad on top of it.  It only cost me $100 and it works perfectly right now, DS loves to look in the mirror while I'm changing him and when we don't need it as a "changing table" anymore, it'll just be a dresser for him.  Its handy to have all his clothes in the drawers below too, so I can just pull out an outfit while he's on the changing table.

And like a pp said, with a little boy, you don't want to be changing him places that aren't "protected" and/or easily cleaned b/c he WILL pee on everything.  :)

  • I have one and we use it for nighttime changes because it is in our bedroom (it was a hand-me-down, though, and I never would have spent money on one - I was planning to just buy the pad and put it on a dresser that we already have).  But during the day when we are downstairs, I just change her on the couch.  Honestly, you don't even need the cushy pad.  A towel works just as well.  But I will say that, because we cloth diaper, it is really nice to be able to store all the accoutrements in the changing table; helps me stay organized.
  • We have one, but we have yet to use it.  Although, Logan is sleeping in a PNP in our room, and we use that changing pad that comes with it a LOT.  So maybe once he's in his room we will use that changing table!
  • We havent moved her to the nursery yet but we are using the changer on the PNP all the time, so i know we will use the one in the nursery. That being said we didnt get a regular changer, we got a dresser that has a removable changer top, so when she is older its just a dresser but it serves our purpose now. Do you have a Once upon a child near you-- they have great used stuff.
  • still using mine.  we only change her on the changing table.

  • I didn't use it that much when he was really little.  It was just easier to lay out a blanket over the couch because we spent most of our time in our family room.  Once he got mobile (crawling then walking) I used it all the time.  It was impossible to change him on the couch or rug anymore because he would roll over and try to crawl away - which is not good with a poopy diaper and furniture and carpeting.  I take him now into the nursery and change him.  He is still roly poly  but he sort of gets the idea that this is where we change diapers and I just need to calm down for 2 minutes.  For the occasions he does still try to escape, at least the mess is contained on a washable changing pad cover.

You don't have to buy a changing table either - I know lots of people who just got a dresser and put one of the pads on top of it (just secure it down so it doesn't slide all over the place).  That way at least if you spend the money the dresser can be used once you don't have babies.

  • We have a dresser with a changing pad on top of it. I use it some of the time otherwise I just change him on the bed or the floor of the playroom. It was definitely used more when he was younger.

I also used these when he was younger to have a waterproof barrier underneath him if we changed him somewhere other than the changing pad in case of accidents. They worked pretty well for him.

  • Whelp, I may be the only one here but I have never used my changing table.  We do use it as a dresser too, so it's not wasted space but the pad thats sitting on top has only held her once and that was when my mom decided she needed to use it at least once and changed her diaper there.  We don't actually have diapers in her room either.

We use a waterproof pad and a tightly woven flannel cloth (you can get them at BRU but I can't find them online).  We have one set in our bedroom and one downstairs.  If we're upstairs she gets changed on our bed.  If we're downstairs she gets changed whereever we are - on the couch or on the floor.

We also have little baskets of changing stations - diapers, wipes, butt paste, extra flannel cloths.

So I say, nope you don't need a changing table, you don't even need a dresser.  Diapers can be changed where ever you need to do it.

  • Can't stress it enough - little baby boys PEE!

Do not try to change your baby anywhere that is hard to clean.  I have had him pee on my bed, on my floor, on the couch, on my ILs kitchen table, on my aunt's couch, on the floor in a restaurant bathroom, and numerous times on my parents' kitchen table.  Took a while for me to accept that he'd pee when air hit his man business, but I can say that we change him in his room whenever possible.

For a changing table, you can use a dresser, a "real" changing table (perhaps a cheapie Ikea one?), or whatever suits.  We have a folder plastic 4' table from Lowe's that we use, and we keep the big boxes of diapers and wipes from BJs below it.  The nursery is very small (8'x10'), and I like that the table can be used elsewhere when we're done with diapers or can fold flat.

  • I use ours for just about every diaper change. She has gone pee and poop in the middle of a change many times. I wouldn't want that on my carpet or couch! We store all of her diapers and wipes on there and the diaper genie is next to it. It's nice to have everything in one spot.
  • We bought a 3 drawer dresser and put a changing pad on top.  It is the only place we change diapers and the walls have been washed down several times with pee.  I also recommend getting two changing pad covers.  Wesley poo'd on one cover just two nights ago.

  • Taylor is over 6 months and we pretty much always use her pnp changing table to change her diapers. We have it out in our living room so it is more convenient. We have a changing table that is part of her dresser and hutch but I think I have only used it twice.
  • bought a dresser and planned on changing him on the top. never used it. we use the changing table on the chicco pack and play. best thing we bought.
  • We don't use it much anyone since DS is so mobile. We do a lot of diaper changes on the floor now. I use the changer a lot when DS was little, but honestly a short dresser with a changing pad on top would have given us more storage space....
  • imageMrsSmith81:
little boys pee EVERYWHERE and ALL THE TIME.

We have a dresser/changer combo and use it almost exclusively. We have him in the PNP now and have a changer attachment, he;s too big for it now but we used it alot the first few weeks. That's the reason I quoted. TJ actually peed from the changer attachment onto the part he sleeps in! I highly recommend a changing table of some form, he's gotten my mom's couch twice and left a wet spot on our floor. So much easier to clean a changing pad!

  • we use our changing table everyday. LINK

  • Sorry this is a late post.  But when I was pg everyone I knew told me not to bother to get a changing table because I would never use it.  So I didn't buy one.  However, a wonderful friend of mine bought us a very nice pack n play that had both the bassinet and changing table attachment.  And can I tell you thank god it does, because we use it for every change.  I love it and would highly recommend it.  However, when looking for one of the pack n plays that has this feature....make sure you check the height of the changing table.  I am sort of tall (5'8") and my sister-in-law has a pack n play with a changer on it that is really low and kills my back when I use it.  Mine is just the right height.  No matter what you decide.  enjoy.

  • We use ours all the time.  DD loves it - DH installed lanterns above them and (when she isn't being silly and playing) she'll lay there and look at the lights.  She actually likes her changing table and doesn't mind being changed.  Sadly she's going to outgrow the table soon.  She's in the 98th percentile and won't fit much longer!
