We're having trouble finding another boys name we like. We like traditional and family (if possible) names, and William is DH's middle name. It's growing on me but I don't care for the nicknames Bill, Billy and Willy. I also have come up with any suggestions yet. We know 2 Bills (one is family and other is friend) so that name is used a lot anyway. DH says we can call him William, and I don't mind Will. But you can't control what others, esp. when he gets to school, call him. His family calls Scott Scotty and I hate it; DH was also called this. Do you have a DC or know someone named William? If so what do you call them? TIA

Re: Do you have a DC/know someone named William?
I know a William and they call him Willy :::shudder:::
You could call him Liam.
I only know of a handful of people and they are peopel I went to HS with and don;t see or talk to anymore.
You can control what other people call your kid by what you call them. I'm in the same boat...William is our boy name, and the only nn I like is Will. I don't know anyone with a nn that gets changed throughout their life. My nephew Anthony is Tony because that's what his parents call him, kwim?
The only nn I didn't see you post was Liam..is that an option for you?
My dad and brother. Dad went (goes) by Bill and they called my brother Billy (which he protested in 6th grade and goes by Bill now).
I think Bill/Billy are old fashioned nn's and if people call him anything, it would be Will. If you went out and polled people under 30 on a nn for William, I doubt many would say Billy. Most people don't even know where the nn came from with my brother (he's 23).
My husband's name is William. He is the Third (FIL and FIL's dad have the same name). My husband goes by Bo. It's a random nn, but it has a family story. DH's grandpa goes by Bill, and FIL was going by Bill also when he was younger. But FIL's sister couldn't say Bill when she was a baby so she'd call him "my Bo." So FIL went by Bo sometimes when he was young. After DS was born, FIL nicknamed him Bo (to avoid confusion with having another Bill I guess). Nobody knows DH as William at all, I think most of his friends would be surprised to know his real name. DS middle name is William after DH but we don't call him by that name in any way.
I've also heard of Liam as a nn for William.
William would be under serious consideration if #2 was a boy. It was my grandfather's name, and he went by Bill.
I also have a cousin who named his son William (Billy), and my best friend's son is a Will.
We would probably use his full name, just like we do for Joseph.
My nephew is William and he's called Will or William. No other nickname has ever been raised. He's only a toddler though.
My grandfather's name is William and he goes by Bill
My cousin's name is William and goes by Billy
And my dad goes by Willy
My blog
DH is from a long line of William's. He goes by his middle name Dominic, but is called Nick.
His dad is Bill, his cousin is Will.
DS is named William Atticus. We decided at the last minute to call him Atticus. We were just going to call him William or maybe Will. I'm with you 100% on the nickname thing. I don't think anyone today would just start calling a William "Bill," especially other kids his age, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.
P.S. Now in retrospect, the nickname Billy is kind of growing on me. Someone pointed out the other day that it sort of sounds like a cute little cowboy name.
My friend has a William and everyone calls him William. She was adamant about it when he was born that she didn't want any nn's and no one has - family or friends.
Also, I agree with pp. People will call your kids what you do (for the most part). My name is Jessica and no one has ever shortened it to Jessie or Jess or anything else. My brother is Daniel and no one calls him Dan or Danny and he is 24 now. We have a cousin and everyone calls him Dan and always has, but that is what his parents nn'd him early on.
Uncle and Cousin are William. There are two kids at my daughter's daycare named William.
