NE1 else's DC not go down the stairs well?

She is just not good at it!  She goes down on her butt and likes to take off flying or sliding down the stairs.  Scares me!  They are steep carpet stairs.

She also has stopped climbing up the stairs for fear of an imaginary bug...but that is another issue!

Re: NE1 else's DC not go down the stairs well?

  • My DS hasn't figured how to go down yet at all, he just starts going, so we always have to be right there for him. No but action yet. Too funny about your DD and the bug :)

  • I haven't tried going down with him yet. So far he only goes up, but when we leave the house he does know to step down from the door into the breezeway so I might start teaching him to do the same with the house stairs as well.

  • I taught M how to turn around & go down backwards off of things. Now she'll turn sideways & stick one foot out so that she can feel how high up she is. Then she'll turn backwards & push herself down.

If we're holding her hand, she just goes down. No butt action here either.

  • Yes!  He knows how to do it on his butt, but he'd rather just fearlessly proceed and fall.  I have to make very sure to be right there with him, holding his hands, while he does it.

  • DD has no concept of coming down the stairs. She will just jump off the top stair - luckily, I am always standing there waiting for her. I've tried to show her how to go down on her belly, feet first, but no luck yet. She knows how to get off the couch though.

  • DS can go down 1-2 steps backwards...like off the deck or out of the house.  But he can't do a flight of stairs.  We don't have stairs (well basement, but he doesn't go there!)...so he doesn't really have anywhere to practice.  He loves going up Grandmas stairs and she is trying to get him to go down backwards...but he is rarely there so I dont' think he remembers.

  • DD isn't even close to going down the stairs yet.  She's a champ at climbing up.

  • we worry about dek's depth perception because he just flies off the edge of a step without caring. if it is one step, like from a patio, most of the time a "careful, there's a step" will slow him down enough to walk off gradually. but never on his butt. and he refuses to go down flights of stairs backwards. in fact, he refuses to climb up on all fours, too! he insists on walking up pulling himself along the railing. it is very scary. but he has gotten pretty good at it. :) i get so frustrated with him when he just takes off on the steps going down, but after reading this, i guess it is age appropriate. and now feel badly for thinking he was not listening well. but it is so scary to watch him just go! my heart can't take it!
