Parenting after a Loss

Is he really tiny??

DS is 9.5 lbs and 20 3/4 inches long. EVERYONE keeps saying he's tiny........ now I'm beginning to become paranoid. Doc said he's growing normally but I still find myself being defensive with people. Much like I was when people called me huge when I was PG. I had one very regular customer at work when I went in to visit that said to me "For how big you were, he's so tiny!" He's not too small right? I know it's irrational but still.....imageimage">

Re: Is he really tiny??

  • I don't think so--my LO is probably about 8.5 pounds and 21 inches at 1 month old today--so either they are both shrimps or just normal...:)

  • If I'm reading your ticker correctly his stats are above average so they must just be referring to him being a newborn.  I heard this comment too but my DD was really born on the smaller side.
  • remind people that he is a newborn.  i hate our country's obsession with size.  would they like him to be like 12 pounds now or something?  I have a sick, tiny preemie & my pedi wants her to gain 1 oz per day.  if your lo is meeting the growth goals of your pedi, i would not worry about it.

Glad it's not just me!! and damissus, he'll be 6 weeks Friday, I know he's healthy and gaining well but it still makes me paranoid lol

  • My DS was the exact opposite...

People kept on making comments about how big he was and made me feel bad like I was feeding him too much. He was breastfed for gosh sake!!

Your LO is healthy and thriving. Ignore what people say :) Your pedi would tell you if you needed to worry.

  • That sounds pretty normal to me!  Honestly, I don't know where people come up with this stuff.  I will get people who tell me DS is big and looks older than he is and than other people will tell me he is so tiny.  He's pretty much in the 50th percentile and since there is a wide range in normal for babies and I think some people think he is big or small based on babies they know well.

  • I think most people aren't used to seeing newborns and forget how little they are.  FWIW, DS was only 9 lbs at 2 months old, I think he was only about 7 lbs at a month.  And the funny thing was, Riley was little b/c he was 5 weeks early so I knew he was small compared to most babies and I was okay with that, but then we'd run into people who would say "oh wow, he's big for his age"  Um...no he's not...he's in the 5th percentile for his age.  Just goes to show you that everyone's perception of size is different and you really can't listen to them.  You and your doctor know he is the perfect size and growing just fine, so try to ignore people's comments.

By the way, he is SO cute! :)

  • K was only 10lbs at 2 months...  So 9lbs at 1 month is a big baby to me Wink

I get that alot though too.  People telling me shw is small but wheat ever. She is growing and that's all that matters.  I know 2 babies that are 7 and 5 weeks younger than her and are all ready longer and one weights more than her!

  • i dont think so, sounds like he is growing well. dd is a little over 8 lbs and 20 in long. some people say that b/c a. they arent around nb that much so they seem tiny b. nb's they now were bigger at birth
  • I think people just aren't used to being around little babies and that's why they say that.  I caught myself saying that to a Mom of a 3 week old, whose baby was the same size as DS when he was 3 weeks!  My Mother over heard and told me to knock it off.  I think also that when people have there own children, they forget so quickly what it's like for them to be little.  He sounds perfect to me.

  • He's really cute.  If you are worried (in other words, if people are giving you a complex), I'd ask the pedi what percentile he's in.  Aidan was in the 90-something-th percentile when he was born, and everyone thought he was tiny.  I think people just see the babies as tiny regardless of actual size because most people aren't accustomed to seeing such young babies on a regular basis.
