Do you plan to get the swine flu vaccine? I am so torn about this. I keep hearing how pregnant women are considered high risk for the swine flu b/c of all the complications they can have. On the other hand I don't see how they could have tested it for long term effects as far as the baby goes. I don't really want to make my baby and myself be their guinea pig.
Thoughts??
Re: Those who are pregnant.....
Are you pregnant again, TRA? Congratulations if you are!!
Not pregnant but TTC and have thought about this. If I get pregnant I am definitely getting this.
I am just looking at the stats for pregnant woman (not sure how accurate but are in the ball park)
1% of the population is pregnant
6% of those that were diagnosed with H1N1 were pregnant
13% of those that died from complications of H1N1 were pregnant.
I don't like those odds. I was sick with the regular flu with DD and it sucked.
Have you talked to you OB about it? Mine highly recommends it.
I was split on how I felt until I read a bit more about how it was manufactured. Each year the "regular" flu shot is tweeked a bit to include new strains. The swine flu came out after that tweeking so there was no time to get it in the regular shot. This is why it's a shot of its own. IMO, after reading that, I feel that it's just as safe as the regular flu vax. If I'm getting the regular one then I'll also get the H1N1 vax.
I sure am!!!! Just found out about a week ago. We are super excited.
Yes. Risk of complications from flu are too high for me to be comfortable (I am immunocompromised because of pregnancy, but I'm also asthmatic, and I got the flu and had complications when I was pg with DD... not an experience I'd like to repeat, TYVM).
The suspension for the FDA approved H1N1 shots are exactly the same as the seasonal flu shots. There is no reason to suspect that H1N1 flu shot would have problems when the seasonal flu shot has been shown to be safe over and over and over and over and over.
The biggest reason that many were initally withholding the recommendation for pregnant women was because the FDA had not approved any shots - and it was unclear whether the suspesions would include new ingredients. Since they're not, there's really no reason to feel like you're a "guinea pig."
The difference between the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine this year is that they know H1N1 is making the rounds. The other strains of flu included in the seasonal flu vaccine are based on speculation.
I'm planning on it bc of this.
And this is what my pedi told me too. I just don't know if there will be enough supply for DD to get it. They are hardly any in my area and they are giving them all to health care workers. I hope I can get it since I'm pg. I'm calling the OB today and will ask them.

After reading section 8.1 on the package inserts for the h1n1 vaccine, I've decided against it.
Where is section 8.1? I don't see it.
How many of those people already had compromised immune systems?
Ditto. I don't do flu shots. Also, {gasp} neither does/will Nick or Lauryn.
Forget it. Found it.
That could be said about pretty much any vaccination you have received. Now or when you where a child.
Star - thank you or posting that. It's exactly what is making my decision so hard. I seriously feel so tortured over this decision.
Someone said that until the FDA has conclusive evidence that there is no fetal harm, they legally have to put that on there. And I think the same thing is on the seasonal flu vaccine that pg women have been getting for years, right?
Ugh. I don't know.
Are your kids in daycare or any kind of schooling? I know by us it's manditory if you have a child in school.
The same blurb is used for the regular flu shot, though, which has been used for many, many years. It is unethical to perform studies on pregnant women--which is why so many medications considered "safe-ish" are still considered category C. However, science shows the shot is safe as there has never been a report of a fetus being affected in a negative way from the shot. The swine flu vaccine has no adjuvants and is essentially the same make-up as the regular flu shot, which has been in production safely for pregnant women and fetuses for many years.
I am on the fence, but leaning towards getting it.
Yep, neither does my DD or DH. We're just a no-flu-shot family.
I fully intended on getting both the seasonal and the H1N1 shots when I was pregnant.
I am still going to get them just in case I am able to get pregnant again during flu season. That way, it is already done and taken care of.
Bloggin' It
Not sure. But I know there were some that only had pregnancy compromising their immune system.
If you're pregnant, you have a compromised immune system.
Then why would they recommend it?? If the literature says not to take it unless necessary! Wtf?? That just confused me even more.
Because according to the statistics, the swine flu is affecting pg women in a scary way--and they don't know why yet. Many doctors do consider it necessary for this reason. Read my previous post in this thread, as well.
Yes, I will get it. I also already got my thim-free seasonal flu shot.
For anyone interested, there is good information (studies, etc.) from the New England Journal of Medicine available at https://h1n1.nejm.org/.
