Babies: 0 - 3 Months

We need bedtime help

I let DD set the schedule for the most part.  Around 7:30-8:00 she usually looks sleepy or falls asleep while nursing.  I try to have her already in her pajamas before that happens so all I have to do is swaddle and bed,  of course it NEVER goes like that.  As soon as I even think the thought her eyes pop open and she is wide awake.  We do the bedtime dance for hours, literally.  Swinging, dancing, sushing, walking, sucking, nursing, swaddling.  IF she falls asleep she is back up after 10-20 minutes.  last night she was so sleepy, so I lay her down and lay in my bed next to her, she didn't cry or fuss, but lay there awake for about 3-4 HOURS! without falling asleep.  The one time she did fall asleep was with the paci and then she dropped it and was up again for a few more hours.  HELP!  I feel like I must be doing something wrong :(

  • I have a hard time, too...but one thing that has been working for us lately is I put a hot water bottle (or heating pad) in her bassinet before I put her down for the night... so when she falls asleep at the breast (after tickling her and trying to keep her awake of course), then I remove the hot water bottle and put her in the bassinet...that way it's warm and cozy and so far, she hasn't budged when I have put her in there like that.  I think it's like the warmth of Mommy's body... GL!

That's a great idea!  Thanks, I'm going to try that :)  DD sleeps great when I pull her into bed with me.....!!

  • Up until about a week ago, we put our DD to bed around 8-9, when we thought she was sleepy.  Only recently, she started to do the same thing.  She would appear sleepy then nurse and eyes would be wide open.  We would end up soothing her for at least another 45 minutes, constantly revisiting her in her crib.  I have been reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and it talks about having an earlier bedtime.  I never thought DD needed to go to bed earlier, but one night we put her down for a nap at 6:30 and she ended up sleeping as if it was bedtime.  Since then, we have been putting her to bed then.  We put her down before she gets too sleepy.  The book also mentions that babies shouldn't be awake for more than 2 hours at a pop, so maybe your baby is overtired.  Their bodies fight sleep and it appears as if their wide awake, but their really overtired.  I know when my DD is awake for more than 2 hours she gets fussy and we quickly start soothing her for sleep and she goes right down!  It might be a solution?!   Good luck.
