Anyone else have a loud "grunter"? (vent-ish)

DS grunts ALL THE TIME and its seriously starting work my nerves!! (hopefully admitting that doesn't make me a horrible mother)  He grunts when he sleeps, when he eats, when you move him, when he moves himself and obviously when he has to burp/toot/have a BM. He does it so loud he ends up in a coughing fit or with the hiccups making it impossible for ME to sleep.

It's so bad that whenever anyone asks my daughter (who is 2.5) what she did today, she replies "listened to Isaac grunt like a sick camel" - evidently she gets annoyed as well!

He doesn't seem to have belly problems, he burps and toots throught the day and blesses me with atleast 4 stinky diapers. I asked the Ped if I should be concerned and he said that its probably just part of his personality...hmmm, so I suppose instead of a cryer or cuddler I get a grunter, great!

  • How old is your LO? I have a grunter, and honestly I find it endearing. I call her my little grunter all the time. Granted she doesn't do it so loud that it keeps me awake. I hope things get easier for you. It's too early for your LO to work your nerves!

I have a grunter too and it doesnt work my nerves I just pretend she is talking to me.  I have my LO in her crib and can hear her over the moniters so it doesnt bother me, when she was in the pnp in our room it did keep me awake cause I kept wondering if I should get up and look at her.  It bothers me that other people are like geez is that normal she sounds like a bear.  I just say she does that all the time, shes just talking to us.  I will say she is different than our friends Lo who really is awake and just lays there very quiet...our grunters keep us on our toes, its like she is just more alert and your not sure if shes just content and grunting or if she is about to fuss.

  • Oh I have a grunter too!  I too pretend that she is talking to me.  She is usually telling DH to do something ;)  She doesn't do it at night as much anymore but when she is awake it is constant.

  • It won't last forever.  Like anything, it will go away and things get better.  My pedi said grunting is VERY normal b/c their esophagus is not fully formed and doesn't open wide enough for them to take full breaths all the time, hence the grunting/shortness in breath/hiccups.  It's completely normal and will eventually get better with age.

I also find it endearing.  My grunter is soooo loud I often have to turn up the TV. I mean, he's a baby...so, no I don't find it annoying.

  • Yup mine grunts 24-7. I'd rather he grunt than cry. I find it funny.

  • Yup!  I have a grunter too!  Had to move him out of the bassinet in our room in to his own room because he was keeping us awake.  Dr. says that he is just very social and it's his way of talking.  I think it's cute now that I know it isn't something that's bothering him.

  • O grunted a LOT at first- with all of his movements asleep or awake. It stopped about the time he started cooing and making other baby sounds. You're not a bad mom!! Hearing the grunting all night and getting up 100 times thinking he was awake started to wear on me, too.
  • All of my boys did this...and grew out of it after a few weeks. Don't worry.[ :)] It freakerd me out on #1 too.
