I registered for the Baby Bjorn and then started lurking on the AP board. I read about how the BB is not good for baby's spine and they cause backaches. So I found a local baby store with several different types of carriers (and they have these awesome dolls to put in them to try out!) and played with all of them.
We have a Baby Bjorn original and it is okay when the baby is little but as they get bigger and heavier it hurts your back. I've heard lots of good stuff about the ergo and want to get one after the baby is 4+ months or so. If I had to do it all over again I'd just get an Ergo. I also bought a peanut shell sling this time. Not sure how that will work out but I wanted to try out a sling for when this one is little since I will be running after my 2 yr old too this time.
We decided to go with the Ergo. We hope to use it a lot and thought this would work well as the babe gets older. Just a FYI, to use the Ergo with an infant you will need to get the insert as well.
I registered for a peanut shell baby sling. If I don't get it I am pretty luck my sister just had her last baby and she has expensive taste in baby products so Mr Silas will be getting great hand me downs she gave me a petunia pickle bottom diaper bag that has never been used and has a peanut shell baby sling as well as a baby bjorn.
We registerd for the Infantano (sp?) Front 2 Back. It's similar to the Baby Bjorn, but cheaper. We have heard really good things about the Ergo, however, we don't want to spend the money, and may be able to borrow an Ergo from a friend to see if we like it.
DC#1: Tried regular bjorn, snuggli, some evenflo thing we borrowed. Everything hurt my back (but DD loved them.)
DC#2: We thought bjorn active carrier was the answer to our prayers. eh, it was ok. Also a pouch sling, which was ok.
DC #3 We are pinning our hopes on a moby wrap and an ergo sport. My friend from france came thisd past sumer and I liked her ergo, although my back did hurt a bit still.
I mostly carried DS in a moby wrap. He's too big for the hug hold, but I can hold him on my hip with it. I also have a sling that I got when he was older and used for the hip carry and I'm excited to try it with this little one. While DS LOVED the Moby, the sling is easier to get on/off when you don't have much time. Also you generally can't wear them as long. It starts to hurt you and isn't good for the baby to be in a sling too long.
I've hinted for an Ergo for xmas. We have a Snuggli, but it just isn't comfy for long esp now that I'm pg again.
I'm interested in seeing everyone's advice, too. Did you try posting this on the Attachment Parenting board? Something tells me those moms would be the authorities on carriers! ;-)
The store (and several moms I know) highly highly recommend the ergo. But it's not as pretty as the Mei Tei and Beco so I opted not to get it
Becos are supposed to be awesome too (and pretty). =0) Plus, they have better business practices I've heard.
eta - You do need an insert for the nb stage for an ergo but not so with a beco.
My sister has one that she's happy with. She is going to bring it out next month so I can try it out with a real baby in it. My niece will be 8 months.
We have the Bjorn Active- I would never get the non-active one- the active has lumbar support, but still the baby gets heavy and it seems like more of a strain on your back.
I also have 2 mei tais and LOVE them- they aren't baby-hawks, but were made for me - I know there is a mom who makes them under the name piggysacks- so you could google that- I know she has a website, also greenbabybargains.com had some on a week or so ago, so you could sign up there and see if they come back.
Since we already had a $100+ Bjorn, I couldn't justify spending more $$ on the ergo/beco, so the mei tai was a great budget option, I love that you can do front and back carries, distribute the weight over both shoulders, and I got to pick out the fabrics so they are cute!
