anyone get home nurse help when they came home?

james gets round the clock nursing care when he comes home. 8-24hrs depending. i have to interview 3 nursing co. that supply the in home nurses in the NICU on monday and i dont know what to ask. i was hoping he was going to come home without any need for that stuff so i am disappointed to say the least. i dont know how i feel about someone being in my house. i also have to decided if i want them at night or during the day. im thinking nights. what are your thoughts ideas? thanks

  • I'm sorry you have to deal with that and can't just be a "normal" family when he comes home, but on the bright side, it's better than the nicu (sorry, trying to help).  I really can't say since i didn't have this, but i might suggest nights so you can sleep a little?

  • please tell me carter is going to be a monkey for halloween. so cute!
  • You may want to post this on the special needs board.  I know there are a few families on there that have nursing care at home for various reasons.  GL!
  • Sorry - I didn't see that you had posted over there already.
  • I would think it would be nice to have the nursing care at night so they can do the night feedings/monitoring, etc.

We have a public healthy nurse that comes once a week to weigh Stella, take her temp, answer questions, etc.  I wish we had a little more help (someone to help with feedings, meds, nebulizers, etc.) so it wasn't such a zoo around here but Stella did not qualify.  I know it's hard, but please try to look past your sadness & really take advantage of the extra help.  I think it's going to be alot nicer than you think!

And Stella came home on O2 & lots of meds & her feedings are a disaster so I know what you mean about being sad about not bringing a normal perfect baby home.  It's hard, but know that your little man will get there!  Hang in there!

  • We had an in-home nurse, but all she did was check DS's weight/temp once a week.  So it wasn't really like having someone in our home.  I would go with nights so you can rest, if you are comfortable with that.  Maybe ask something about communication between you and the nurse, so you know how things will transpire.  Also, how much will the nurse be doing vs. what you are expected to do.  Just so you both understand the boundaries.  It seems like this kind of situation has the potential for toes to be stepped on.  I hope it works out well and you find someone you like.

He does have a monkey costume hanging in his closet...but no.  My mom brought it home one day for him, but A)it's hard to tell if its a monkey, bear, or dog...lol....and B) As his mommy i wanted to buy his first ever costume...he's going to be a giraffe!
