Infertility

Should I go to the RE?

DH and I went in for our infertility consult with my doctor. She's setting me up with the HSG and DH is set to do the SA. She said that it was up to me when I wanted to be sent to the RE. I asked her about having to re-do any tests that she will do and she said the place she will send me hasn't had to re-do any tests in the past. She said that she is comfortable monitoring me if it comes to Clomid.

So my question is this: If this were you, would you stay with the doctor that you are comfortable with or go to the RE right away? My OBGYN is about 15 minutes from my office so it makes appointments easy to do on my lunch right now...The RE is about 30 minutes away which would be more time I would have to take of work...

(I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say! : ) Thanks girls!

Re: Should I go to the RE?

  • My thought is to see the RE... If you have had a hard time getting pregnant, the RE is the specialist in getting you pregnant.

I LOVE my OB, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my RE.

     Good luck!

  • Ditto to the previous pp.  Without being a smarta$$ here, you wouldn't continue seeing a general practioner if you needed a specialist in any other medical field.  It sounds like your OB/Gyn is pretty supportive of your decisions and is getting some of the preliminary tests done, so that when you do see a RE, you will be that much further along.

Good luck to you with your decision!

  • Go to an RE - they are the ones that really know how to get people PG.

An OBGyn can help, but only to an extent (typically just clomid).  I would want to develop rapport with an RE from the get go.

  • I would probably wait until you get the test results back to decide if you want to go to the RE, but I'd probably end up there eventually anyway. I mgith be ok with an ob monitoring me on clomid. I know mine had no interest or intention of taking me any further than clomid, he'd have sent me straight to the RE if clomid didn't work. (It didn't, but I self-referred anyway.)

  • I would probably go with the RE. Or at least set up a consult with one and go from there.

  • Go straight the RE if you can.

We wasted a year and more tears than I can tell you with my OB -- and I adore my OB. But he just didn't have the experience and the time required. In fact, I had on IUI cycle go completely awry because he missed my ovulation.

As soon as I met the RE, I felt like a huge relief was lifted. I know it wasn't guaranteed that he could get me pregnant but I felt like it was his JOB and he spent 7 days a week doing it, so we had a much better shot with him. I was upset that I had wasted so much time trying with another doctor.

Plus, to be honest, sitting in the OB/GYN waiting room month after month with pregnant women around me really started to crush me.

Lots of hugs and luck to you.

  • I agree with the above posters... DEFINITELY the RE! Unlike the other responders, I have yet to have a good, steady OB, so when it came time, I went straight to the RE. Best of luck.
