QOTD:  If you could ask us second or more time mommies anything... about birth, babies, etc.  What would it be?  This is your opportunity!  Mommies with experience... let's try and get some questions answered and maybe ask some questions of each other.  Have fun discussing!

Me:  I have a question for other mommies with toddlers... How are your LOs doing with the coming change?  Are they interested or no?  DS seems interested and excited but he has also become SUPER clingy to me and has suddenly developed an anti-daddy thing....

  • Truly, how useful is Boppy? haha my friend who is a nanny and I had this debate this morning.

  • DS is a little too young to know what's going on but I did order him a big brother book from amazon yesterday.  I'd still like to "prep" him.
  • For working moms: What was it like going back to work? How much time did you take off?

I hardly used it...it just wasn't supportive/useful.  I would like to try the My Brest Friend pillow this time though b/c I've heard it's much better than the boppy and my LCs recommend it over the boppy.

LOL, Boppy's can be really useful for some mommies... like if they had a c section and need more support for nursing.  I didn't really use mine for much until Elliot started practicing sitting up.  I guess I didn't really need mine for much but I had one so used it.

I took 3 months off after the birth.  It wasn't hard for me but DH is a SAHD so perhaps that's why.

  • Hey all!

I am home doing my 24 hour urine collection (I know you're all jealous!).

QOTD:  I am undecided abot whether we should get a cleaning service during my maternity leave. Would you have found someone coming in a few times/month helpful those first couple of months or intrusive?

I find myself wondering the same thing.  We didn't hire our cleaning lady until after I went back to work.  I can't decide if it would get annoying having them come in while home with a newborn and toddler or if the dirt building up would annoy me more (because let's be honest, I won't be cleaning!).  I think I'm leaning towards keep having them come and just leaving for the park while they are there.

Helpful, and still is!  I wouldn't do it until LO is a couple of weeks old though.... Maybe have them come in to do a super deep clean before the birth.

Also, I AM super jealous... LOL!  Is that all in one cup or a cup for each time?  What is it for... protein?

  • For those of you that delivered vaginally.... how long does it take to deliver the placenta?  And how hard is that part of it?
  • I think I maybe pushed through one more contraction... at that point, I honestly don't remember much more than Elliot, happiness, and exhaustion.  The placenta is nothing to worry about really... IMO.

Agree with PP - it's nothing.  I didn't even feel it.  Dr just asked me to push, I did and voila.

Yes, it's for protein. I had a +2 at my appt. yesterday (after not having any protein the whole pregnancy), so they wanted to do a 24 hour collection to be safe.

It's gross. You basically pee in a cup and then transfer that to a big jar that has to be kept cool. I am glad I have the option to occassionally work from home, because I can't imagine trying to do this in the office. IndifferentThe lab said, 'Oh, if you need to do this at work, just bring in a cooler." Yeah. Right. "Hey guys, don't mind this cooler full of my pee next to my desk."

  • What things did you do with your first kid that you think are silly now? Like did you over-clean everything all the time or make people use sanitizer before touching baby or refuse to take baby out in public? I am the type to do these things, so I want to know if I'll think it's ridiculous later on! LOL
  • My DS pulled the big brother card on me the other day and I was totally shocked! He never really says anything when people ask him if he's going to be a big brother. He got ahold of my jar of bath salts which is huge BTW and it was everywhere. He even stuffed it in our candles, beteween the couch cushions, all over the coffee table. When I asked him why he did it... his response "I'm going to be a big brother (with a HUGE grin on his face)" Priceless I couldn't help but laugh. He was even nice enough to help me vacuume it all up. I guess that's a spark of interest. LoL

  • I will be offically coming over to third tri on Monday and my DD is the 19th so we are about halfway there.

QOTD:  Tell me about the bleeding after delivery.  How heavy is it?  How long does it last?  Is it different for c/s vs vaginal as far as how heavy it is and how long it lasts?

  • My DD is 5 yrs old and VERY excited about the coming baby. I have been trying to keep her very involved with her helping to decorate the nursery and pick out clothes. She also came with us to one of our U/S appts. so she could see the baby. We even bought her her own baby name book so she could help with the name. She kisses and hugs my belly every morning and every night before bed :-) I hope she is this excited when the baby gets here!
  • I'm two days early, but I was lurking over here and thought I'd go ahead and participate Smile

How long did you LO stay in newborn diapers? I know it depends on what size they are when they are born, but I've had a bunch of people tell me not to register for any newborn size and/or not to buy any newborn size because the kid will only wear them for a few days, if at all.

Also, how hard was it for you to recover after a vaginal birth? I don't have any sisters or friends who have had babies, so I really don't know much about any of this.

I wouldn't worry so much about planning around LOs eating schedule!  I will be much more confident with nursing in public... although with the first, it does take awhile to get the hang of it and feel comfortable.

  • i hated my boppy!

i took 6 weeks off and returned to work. too soon.  won't happen this time. but it's nice that dh is a SAHD so she's got one parent at home.

i think it took maybe 5-10 minutes to deliver the placenta?  i honestly wasn't aware because i was holding my daughter for the first time.

i didn't have any pain after my vaginal birth. i think i took an advil once.  i had a lot of bleeding and it lasted many many weeks. but it didn't hurt.

the most painful part of recovering after giving birth was having my milk come in and getting mastitis within a few weeks.

I bled for about 6 weeks, pretty heavy for the first two and then moderate to light for the rest.  I only had 2-3 stitches though....

Recovery ?-  I was comfortable doing light yoga and walking at about 7 weeks.  We had sex again at about 10 weeks... it hurt, but got better with each time after.

Newborn diaper ?- Elliot was 8lbs2oz and wore Newborn dipes for about a month.

This is my third and I used the boppy religiously for nursing and for infant tummy time for my first two. I would not be without one!

  • imageNennifre:

For working moms: What was it like going back to work? How much time did you take off?

With my first two I took the standard 12 wks FMLA, with the first I worked from home for an additional one month. Honestly, it's not really enough. It's very hard to focus on no sleep for at least the first 6-8 months before I really felt myself again at work. And the pumping a couple times a day at work is hard on the milk supply, at that point I had to supplement with about 40% formula, 60% breast milk.

Be open and lenient with parenting style. As much as you say you won't use candy or treats to "quiet" a toddler or put on the TV to get a few minutes of rest, it becomes an aboslute necessity to get through your day or through a grocery store or a phone call.

took off 12 weeks and it hasn't too hard just getting my schedule down in morning was..like when to get up and get everyone ready.I made DH drop son off at the babysitter though Embarrassed

  • Do you find an infant carseat really necessary, or can we make do with a convertible and a soft carrier?  I don't plan on using the carseat as a carrier if we do get one...

I found the infant seat VERY necessary with my first two, in fact I don't know any parent that didn't use one. You just pop the baby into and out of the car while sleeping all cozy and can carry them anywhere in it, pop it into the stroller, shopping cart or on your living room floor if you get home and they are still sleeping.

I didn't think that I would use mine as a carrier... I am really into babywearing, but we did end up using it quite a bit.  When he was asleep, when it was really cold out (remember I'm in MN)it was also really good to have in the house.  This may sound weird but Elliot slept better in it than his crib sometimes... he really liked to be tightly swaddled and I think felt more secure in it.

Edit:  When it got warmer and I became more comfortable wearing him... it was easier for me to transfer him from seat to ergo without waking him.

  • i would never give up my infant carrier. we have a britax and evenflo convertible seat that are both good for infants.  but i wouldn't trade my graco snugride for the ease of transferring baby in and out of the car without waking her up.

oh i'll have fun with this!!   my biggest question for those going into #2 or more-is seriously how to fit that much love everyday in.   last night i looked at my hubby and i said that is why i would like a boy-i just can't imagine loving another little girl as much as i love my daughter.   i asked his thoughts and he said "try loving 3 of you"  awww  but seriously that is my biggest wonderment thing right now.

stephloes to answer yours--my daughter is very excited-knows there is a baby in my tummy.  she kisses the belly, gives it "puppy licks", talks to my belly "hi baby" etc.   she is a little momma with her babies so i'm sure i'll have a big helper.   we have transitioned her to a "big sister" room and talk a lot about how she is the big sister and what that means.  she even asks for us to read the "new baby" stories we have for her.

  • Truly, how useful is Boppy? haha my friend who is a nanny and I had this debate this morning

I used the boppy for my own neck and back support, for tummy time support and to prop my daughter in after she was done eating-kept her upright for a bit.   really used it often!

I know that it just happens of course but I have had similar thoughts.  I worry about time, I have been able to spend so much time with Elliot.  How will he do when he gets less of it... and how will this little one be different because she is getting less time than Elliot did...

  • Do you find an infant carseat really necessary, or can we make do with a convertible and a soft carrier?  I don't plan on using the carseat as a carrier if we do get one...

It's not if all your kid does is scream in it.  I've spoken with lots of other moms and you'd be surprised how many said the same thing!  When we switched to a convertible, car travel got much easier.

We are going straight to a convertible this time.  We're holding on to DS' old infant seat but I always give it the evil eye.  LOL

  • For working moms: What was it like going back to work? How much time did you take off?

going back to work is hard-i hope no one will lie to you about that.  one of the best pieces of advice i got the first time around was to send baby to daycare a few times while i was still on maternity leave.   the first time sucked-but my hubby took her so i wouldn't have to deal with the leaving part.   we did like 3 hours, then we did another day for a few hours.  one day before i went back and hubby was also off we did a longer day and enjoyed some couple time together.  doing that really helped a lot.   one of the best things my mommy friends told me to do!!

i took a full 11 weeks off with my daughter and this time i am going for 10.   my hubby took a week off when i went back to work so she was home for 12 weeks with us.   take time to travel to visit people-go to grandmas etc.   i was just thinking today that my daughter and i did a lot during my maternity leave-we went to great grandmas, went to madison wi, went to see daddy at work etc.

  • For those of you that delivered vaginally.... how long does it take to deliver the placenta?  And how hard is that part of it?

it is quick-like seriously a minute or less-in fact i think i did it and didn't even really realize it.   so caught up in looking at your new child etc.   very easy-at least for me it was.   maybe others have different experiences but i think 1 push or 2 is all

Good point.  This happened to a friend of mine, her daughter HATED it as much as Elliot LOVED it!  I guess it totally depends on the baby.

hmm i didn't go all clean freak-in fact with two dogs i think it took me two days to forget about fighting the uphill battle against dog hair!   we went out in public at 2 weeks-because being home alone i needed to get out and get air!   i won't go to work as much this time-last time i went in for trainings once per month and checked my work e-mail.  i don't want to do that this time.   not stress about them getting enough to eat-i did this and it really is probably what made breast feeding hard.   this time i want to pump and just make sure baby is thriving-which my daughter did just fine.   probably not be as quick with getting pictures out to people-they can wait!! :)

  • How long did you LO stay in newborn diapers? I know it depends on what size they are when they are born, but I've had a bunch of people tell me not to register for any newborn size and/or not to buy any newborn size because the kid will only wear them for a few days, if at all.

Also, how hard was it for you to recover after a vaginal birth? I don't have any sisters or friends who have had babies, so I really don't know much about any of this.

if i remember she was in newborn diapers maybe 2 weeks.  then we went to size 1 (she was 8lbs 9oz at birth so didn't take long to get up there).  size one are 8-12lbs i think so that is why we switched quick.   fortunately we had tons of different diapers in various sizes from my showers-it was 3 weeks or more before we had to actually go buy any-i'm gonna miss that this time around!

vaginal recovery was probably 2 weeks-before i felt more normal.   i was induced so pictocin made my ankles swell-a lot.  i was wobbly for a week.   pain in vag area really didn't last long at all-just when using the restroom.  otherwise i was pretty okay.   your body goes through a lot during labor and delivery-traumatic experience so it takes a bit to bounce back.  but with rest and such it really goes fast.
