fans prevent SIDS??

I saw a post a few days ago about a fan can help prevent SIDS.  I didnt have time to respond and forgot to save the thread but I never heard of this before.  Can someone tell me more about it?  We have a ceiling fan in DDs room but its too cold to put it on.  Is the point just to circulate air?  Would an air purifier also be benificial because I was thinking about getting one anyway.

    From what I understand it's about circulation.  That's one of the reasons that thick bumpers are also not suggested (besides the suffocation risk)--it blocks air circulation.

    An air purifier couldn't hurt (especially in terms of allergies) but I don't think it's connected to SIDS.

    Yep, its the air circulating thing. We don't have a ceiling fan, so we bought one of those plug-in ones but aim it into a corner, away from DS. That keeps the air circulating but he doesn't get cold. I don't think they prevent SIDS, but if I remember correctly they're supposed to reduce the risk by 16%.

    If you want the benefit of the extra air circulation, change the direction of the fan so it turns the other way and the air blows up instead of down.  That way it won't be blowing right on LO.

    The air circulation helps babies breathe in fresh air...opposed to nasty stale air.  Gives them clean oxygen I guess.
