Random worry - back sleepers

I sleep on my back at least 80% of the time, and I know that as my pregnancy progresses, this is not a good idea b/c it puts pressure on a vein that could reduce blood supply to the fetus. I have no idea how I'm not going to sleep on my back, though. Even when I fall asleep on my side I must move during the night b/c I wake up on my back. It's also often the only position I find comfortable, and my insomnia has been so bad that I can't avoid it. Anyway, what have other back sleepers done about this? I know I could try a pillows, but I have a feeling that might not do the trick. Does anyone know at what point it's suggested you stop sleeping on your back?

Re: Random worry - back sleepers

  • Four months

I would try wedging a full body pillow under your back so when you roll you stop before you're flat on your back.

  • They always say back sleeping is not good, but honestly as you get farther along in your pregnancy, and sleep is almost non existent, you will sleep whatever way makes you comfortable. Body pillows help, but I wouldn't worry to much about how your sleeping, vs the comfort your getting. But the body pillow, and using other pillows to prop yourself work wonders.

  • When I was pregnant with dd I had a pillow in front of me and behind me. I wedged the pillow behind my back and slept somewhat on my back but at an angle so I wasn't completely on my back. I still sleep that way now. It's the most comfortable position for me.

  • My Dh tells me that I sleep on my back for most of the night (well when I am actually asleep, which is getting to be smaller and smaller amounts of time).  I feel like my body would tell me or wake me up if I am doing something wrong, so if it isn't I think I am fine...I wouldn't stress out too much!
  • Sleep however you can sleep. As you get bigger, you are going to toss and turn a lot. And trust me, if your body and/or baby are uncomfortable, you will know it and feel the urge to move. There is no reason to worry about sleeping on your back.
  • You can sleep on your back as long as you want. If you hit that nerve, your body will make you roll over.
  • Also, if you are uncomfortable because you like back sleeping, try the couch propped up, that's where I spent a good deal of the nights during my last pregnancy - don't know why it was so much better than the bed, but hey, do what you can!
  • Thanks for the responses, ladies, that makes me feel better. I was envisioning nights of getting NO sleep if I couldn't sleep on my back. I will give a pillow a whirl too.
