Weight question

We found out this past week that we're expecting twins.  It was so shocking, I couldnt think of the right questions to ask the doc at the NT scan.

I've only gained 1 pound so far.  Does anyone have a good website or reference of some sort as to how much weight I should gain?  If it was a singleton, I should have gained about 25lbs.

Re: Weight question

  • I myself gained 58 pounds during my pregnancy (my girls were 6.14 & 7.1 born at 36 weeks, 2 days)...at 12 weeks though I think I was only up a couple pounds (lost a little weight in the beginning due to ms).  I loosely followed Dr. Luke's book when you are expecting twins, triplets or more (I think is the name of it) regarding diet...Good luck and congrats!

Typical gain is 40-50 lbs over the course of the pregnancy.  Everyone here usually recommends Dr.Luke's book, What to Expect when you're Expecting Twins, Triplets, & Quads.  She outlines weight gain and nutrition needed.

  • My doctor has told me 35-45lbs is ideal for me. Although I believe the main goal for multiples is to get to 24lbs by 24 weeks in case of early delivery.

I've definitely "met my goal" as I'm up about 30lbs so far at 27 weeks.

  • I gained 53lbs and my boys were 6lbs 10oz and 6lbs 3oz born at 36w4d.

I was considered 'underweight' pre-preg and by 12 weeks (we found out at NT scan) I had gained 1.5.

  • I was slightly overweight before becoming pregnant.  My doctor recommends I gain at least 40 lbs for my twin pregnancy.  So far at 16 weeks, I've gained 11 lbs.  I gained 4 lbs by my 8 weeks appt.  Nothing at 12 weeks (probably due to m/s). And I gained 7 lbs from 12-16 weeks.

If you're neither over/underweight I would think 40-50 lbs should be enough.  It's more important to gain most of your weight in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.  Most people don't gain much/any weight in the 1st trimester.  If you do, it probably water weight.

  • Another ditto for Dr. Luke's book. She recommends gaining 40-56 lbs for a twin pregnancy if you are normal weight to begin with. I gained 54, and ad my twins at 37w6d. They were 6lbs 10oz and 6lbs 7oz.

  • My OB recommended 35-40 lbs with me and although I didnt make the 24lbs and 24 week goal, Im still on target to hit 35 lbs if I make it to 38 weeks.

  • I too was slightly overweight before pregancy... I have gained 10 pounds in 15 weeks - my "goal" according to Dr. Luke is 35 pounds total... I am sure that I will exceed that!!!!

  • i followed Dr. Luke's guidelines (not the diet- but the idea of eating a lot of protein, dairy, and gaining 24lbs in 24weeks).  I gained a total of 40lbs --- and went to 38w1d to my scheduled c/s.  My boys were 6lb 6oz and 7lb 15.6oz --- so it worked very well for me!

    welcome, congrats, and good luck!

  • Definitely get Dr. Luke's book.  I was told 40 pounds for me (I'm 5'1") and was also told (and all the books say this too) that I should gain most of that weight by 28 weeks because I'm carrying multiples rather than a singleton.  I'm working hard at eating...the right things.  The general rule is 20 pounds by 20 weeks, but I think it is easier for those that didn't have m/s.  GL!!!
