I was at my OB last week and the nurse mentioned I sounded stuffed up. I said yeah my throat was a little sore and I was a little congested as I was fighting a cold. She asked me what I was doing for relief.
I told her I set up our humidifier in our bedroom and I had been drinking hot tea and that really helped with the tickle in my throat. And drinking water to keep taking in lots of fluids.
Her eyes got HUGE and she exclaimed: "You're drinking tea??? That has caffine in it!!!". I told her I went out and bought caffine-free peppermint tea. She yelled at me that caffine-free tea still has caffine in it. She made me feel like I was doing a really horrible thing by drinking 2 cups of this a day.
Re: strange comment from OB nurse
After 22 cycles and tube removal our IVF miracle has arrived! Detailed IF and IVF info in bio.
Ditto. I've been drinking coffee for most of this pregnancy.
OB nurse is a moron.
A. Herbal tea does not have caffeine in it.
B. Even if it did, so what? 200 mg of caffeine a day is fine.
What a jerk. My midwives know I have at least 2 cups of tea or coffee a day and they don't care. There is no consensus about the effects of caffeine on pregnancy. Some studies go one way, some the other. When someone makes an accusatory statement like that, you've got to stand up for yourself and put them in their place:
"Why do you think caffeine is dangerous? Did you know that the March of Dimes recommends you limit your intake to 200 MG a day? Do you know how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee or soda? I do. Did you know that in some of the studies where caffeine was shown to cause problems in pregnancy the women were drinking more than 8 cups of coffee a day? Do you know how many MGs of caffeine are in caffeine-free herbal tea? I guess you don't, but I do."
Mmhm. What to Expect When You're Expecting talks about the 200mg/day limit. My OB tells me to drink something with caffeine in it when I have headaches.
First, drink the caffeine if you want! In moderation, it's fine.
Second, love your dog in his costume! My dog had the same costume a few years ago. This year he is going to be a prisoner (he must hate me every October)!
