Any of you with PTSD?

I talked to my doctor today and he said because of my PTSD he highly recommends an epidural but I really wasn't planning on getting one.

I'm just curious if you think your PTSD affected your delivery at all and if you got meds or not, any tips really would help.  Thanks.

Re: Any of you with PTSD?

  • I don't have any experience. But in my opinion if a your doctor is highly recommending it, it is probably for a reason and you should definitely consider it. If it is against your birth plan to get an epidural then that is really a tough call and I'm sorry!

  • With out knowing anything about specific about your situation its hard to say.

For some trauma survivors it is very important to be aware of every sensation and to stay in the moment, stay in control and not to check out.  I do not have PTSD but am a survivor of childhood abuse and did alot of preparation towards having a positive birth experience.  It was very important that I have a natural birth.  If I had been restricted physically in any way during labour, things might have gotten ugly :)

Good Luck.  I would be wary of a suggestion that you "need" an epidural, perhaps you "need" to avoid one. KWIM?

This is kinda my worry.  I dont want to have an epidural and feel like I'm not in control of things and can't feel my body, I think it would freak me out more and make things unpleasant for everyone.

What did you do to prepare for your experience? Is there anything you would recommend?  Feel free to PM me please!

  • I will PM tomorrow, I am having an entire day of nursing the baby!

The best resource I found was a book called "When Survivors give Birth"  by Peggy Simpkin and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I will send you a more informative message soon.
