Pregnant after a Loss

bottles vs. drop-in liners

Which are you planning on using? I am going to BF for the first few months, but in case I have to supplement or pump, I need to buy bottles. I am leaning towards bottles bc we're trying to be environmentally friendly.

Re: bottles vs. drop-in liners

  • I was going to use the drop-in's, but then I couldn't figure out how to use them with my breast pump.  Maybe I am dumb, but I decided rather than to hurt my brain by thinking too hard, I would go with bottles.

  • I am one of the very few here who will not be BF'ing. I have some bottles, but I'm going to buy some of the playtex drop in liners as well just to see if there's one that baby prefers more. I've also heard that the liners can really help with gassiness.

LOL, that sounds like a good enough reason to me!

That's a good idea...I heard that too- I registered for the Playtex VentAire Bottles, which help with gassiness and colic.

I figure even if I use drop ins I would still have bottle parts to wash.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

  • I am doing dop ins. I did it with my DD, she never had gas or was colicky. As far as the breast pump, doesn't it come with a bottle to pump in? (This is the kind I had the last time, but it was 8 years ago!) I would just pump in the bottle and poor it into the liner. The only thing I washed was the nipples, but to me, there was so much less of a chance to suck in air than with a bottle.

  • I will be using the Advent bottles, no drop in's. When I worked in a daycare in HS I liked the Advent bottles the best.

  • I loved the drop-in's with DS. I would like to be more environmentally friendly, but my personal need for convenience on this one won out. Plus, it really does mimic breastfeeding as closely as you can with a bottle, which is helpful when you're trying to use both breast and bottle. I figure I FF minimally enough that it doesn't make a huge environmental impact- I probably used 2-3 boxes, total, of the liners with DS, b/c I BF'd all but his feedings while I was at work. And by the time he was drinking a lot more formula when I stopped BFing, he was using sippy cups.
  • I think we are going to get some of the Avent and some of the drop ins to start. I will be BFing but will have to pump once I go back to work. I have heard it is a good idea to have a few types in the beginning because the baby will let you know which one they like best. The drop ins are supposed to resemble BFing the most and less gas etc...I have heard really good things about Avent though too, and they are obviously more environmentally friendly.

  • Just a tip from a pumping drop-in using momma. I just use the bags that I freeze the milk in. I use lansinoh bags but I think any of them would work like this.

So you take the milk out of the freezer and thaw it. ( I always thaw the bags inside a ziploc b/c I've had some bags leak or crack in the freezer, Kills me to waste milk) Then once its thawed/warmed I pull the bag up through the bottom of the drop-in bottle and then fold the bag down over the top edge of the bottle. You just have to pull the top edge down enough so that the zipper part is below the part where you screw the top on. Practice with water once or twice and you will get the hang of it.

Its awesome and cuts down on waste. I fugure I have to have something to freeze the milk in and bags ir the easiest. This way I only throw away the bag and not a bag and liner.

I do keep a few regular bottles and some liners on hand just in case the bag leaks.

    HTH.
