The N1H1 Vaccine: Yes or No?

Ok I'm sure this question has been discussed a thousand time already but DD, DH and I are going to get our flu shots this week and I'm still trying to decide if I want to get myself or DD the N1H1 vaccine or not.

 1) Will you be getting it for yourself or your LO?

2) Why or why not?

 TIA!

Re: The N1H1 Vaccine: Yes or No?

  • Yes.  The risk of flu complications while I'm pg and in a newborn are too high for me to not do it.  DD, DH and I will all be getting seasonal and H1N1 flu shots.

    H1N1.

Yes, we'll all be getting it if it's available.  Between DS being in daycare and me being pregnant, we're higher risk. All getting regular flu shots, too.

  • So are you going to base you decision on what we all have to say?  I don't get it.

  • No, I'm just curious whether others will be getting it and what their reasons for doing it or not doing it are.

  • Henry will be getting both and DH and I will be getting the regular flu shots. Henry has asthma (recently was in the hospital overnight after an asthma attack) and because he has a respiratory condition he is HIGH on the list to get the shot. My feeling is that if the CDC and VT Dept of Health say that it is 100% safe than I need to trust them. I also trust our Pedi and our hospital, all of which said we need to vaccinate Henry. GL!

  • None of us are going to get the H1N1 vaccine. We would require scientific evidence (which is currently unavailable) of its efficacy and safety before we would decide to receive the injections.
  • Yes, we will get it when/if it is available in our area. It is the same as the regular flu shot, it is just that the H1N1 strand wasn't ready when the seasonal flu shot went into production, so it is being distributed separately.

NYTimes has some good articles about it.

Not sure what evidence BlueBelle is looking for, but I will be happy not worrying about getting swine flu.

  • None of us (my kids included) are getting the regular flu shot or the H1N1 flu shot.  We never get flu shots, are frequent hand washers and I SAH with Ben.  I have strong (and unpopular for this board) opinions about the swine flu vax, so I'll just leave it at the fact that we aren''t getting it.  And even if we wanted to, my pedi has the same opinion about it as I do and is not offering it to their patients.
  • Yes, we will all be getting it.  We plan to ttc in December/January and I don't want to worry about it. We all got seasonal flu as well. As pp said, it would have been included in the seasonal flu shot if they could have gotten it ready in time.

  • No, we don't do flu shots here. Here's a link to the package inserts for lots of vaccines, flu and h1n1 included. Reading those played a part in our decision, especially where it states: It is also not known whether Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or FLUVIRIN can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. Vitamin D and proper handwashing can go a long way against the flu.

I am going to say I could have said exactly what my friend Seans_grl said!

My doctor is not supporting the H1N1 vac either (do we see the same doctor, Cheryll??)
