Is it ok to add BM to RTF formula bottles?

I supplement a few bottles at night. Is it ok to add a little BM to DDs formula bottles? In my mind I figure it gives her a little more antibodies but this could be completely false. I ask bc I am thinking of cutting down my pumping time so that she wont have full bottles of BM but formula and a little BM. We cant use powder so mixing it with BM (which Ive heard of) is out..TIA!

  • The only risk with mixing formula and breastmilk is that if DD doesn't finish the bottle, you will be essentially wasting your milk.

  • Our nurses did it in the hospital with DD. I think it should be okay, but maybe ask your pedi for sure.
  • DS eats around 6-7 oz's at every bottle. I give 5 oz's of BM so as not to waste it and then supplement with 2 oz's of Alimentum. He doesn't always finish the Alimentum but I value my BM over the formula, even if it is so damn expensive!

  • I supplement a tiny bit when I don't have enough pumped milk to feed my DS. It's usually only an ounce or two, and I add the formula to the BM and feed him a combo. I've never given him straight formula, I've always added it to the BM.
  • I was told no, that the formula kills the antibodies in breastmilk.
