Do you give iron supplements?

Just curious.  DS has been a little low on iron in the diet lately, not for lack of trying.  But, now his bruises are taking a little longer to heal and his head banging from tantrums has given him a nice bruise on the forehead with only a couple bangs....  :-(  I'm thinking about supplementing him after talking to his pedi again but am hoping I can get him to eat a bit more that has iron in it naturally.  We'll see if the burritos go over well tonight for an indication.  Also, can you get them in drops?

  • I don't give her any.  I always make sure she gets a few bites of meat at dinner and she will even eat more if we give her dipping sauce (but you know all about the power of dip, LOL).  I know you can get something like poly-vi-sol with the iron in it.

  • We do because DS's hemoglobin was just a bit low at his 9 month check.  Our pedi is pretty sure we'll only have to do it until 12 months and I prefer to nip it in the bud.  Now that he's eating meat the numbers should be going up naturally as well.

  • I just got hime some Maxi-Baby Care vitamins from whole foods over the weekend but forgot to look for something with iron in it.  The Poly-Vi-Sol is currently not being carried here at Wal-Mart or Target and it's too expensive at the grocery stores because they charge a few bucks more.  Plus, I don't know what additives are in the Enfamil stuff.
  • We don't - his iron was fine at his 9 mo.  When I was being more vigilant about it, I always tried to make sure that when he had high iron foods, he also had some vitamin C rich foods, as vitamin C aids iron absorption.  Calcium tends to inhibit it.

  • I forgot to add, DS doesn't eat meat except fish sticks on rare occasion if that counts.
  • sweet potatoes, broccoli and spinach are all excellent iron sources.

Well, I have an unopened bottle if you're interested.  We're not going to use it.  I understand the additive concern though!

Thanks!  I'm trying to limit the additives and other stuff where I can right now though.

  • Green beans are great too!

  • Did his pedi want to test his iron levels?  It is better to get it in his diet vs a supplement (and avoid calcium when you giving him his iron-rich foods, like the PP said- it inhibits iron absorption.)

I work in an iron deficency lab and I would get his tested and then get him on a supplement if needed.  You don't want your little boy to have low iron and it seems like you are concerned about it.
