Bowel Movements for EBF babies

How long did your baby go without a bowel movement?  My son is now on day 10.  From everything I read on the internet I should not be worried if he isnt running a fever, uncomfortable or his stomach isnt hard or distended.  He has none of these symptoms.  He seems completely fine.  I called the ped and he told me to give him prune juice, which we did and it did nothing and then he said we could give him the glycerin suppository but I am not sure I want to do this if it isnt necessary.  He is going to in to see the ped tomorrow but I am just wondering if anyone else has gone through this.

Thanks for any advice or similar stories....

Re: Bowel Movements for EBF babies

  • I'm a ped colorectal nurse and 10 days seems like a long time to me, although if your ped isn't concerned then I would just wait and see.  BM is much more easily digested than formula so generally EBF babies have more freq bm's.  The suppositories really aren't that bad, but like you said you are seeing the ped tomorrow so another day isn't a big deal.

  • I've read that up to 2 weeks is normal.  DS hit that mark once (and it was the nuclear explosion when it did come!).  I was like you and preferred to let it come naturally since he didn't seem uncomfortable, but of course talk it over with your pedi some more tomorrow.

  • I think 10 days is too long. My Dr. told me after 2 days to call her. Just in the past week he has went a few times without going for a day and he gets fussy if it's been a day. Many of my friends have used the suppositories and I've talked to my Dr. about them & the babies aren't uncomfortable. Just be aware if you use them that it is instant.
  • The longest my son has gone between bm's is 9 days.  Like yours, he didn't seem uncomfortable or fussy.  His doctor is not concerned but said we could try prune juice.  We tried it once and he drank about a half ounce...it did nothing.  I'm a firm believer that they'll go when they need to.  I would ask your pedi again tomorrow and go with what they say.  Just know that you can give him juice and a suppository but if he doesn't need to go, he's not going to go.  We gave our son a suppository once and it took him over 12 hours to go....it was not instant which told me that he simply didn't need to go right that instant.
  • Geesh, I love how even every Pedi is different. Mine said it is no big deal if they are not having any other symptoms. She has seen babies go 3-4 weeks and be fine. I don't know what to think, since you hear so many opinions, but if LO was seems fine then they probably are!

  • My Daughter is on day 8.  She has had a couple of small ones here and there but nothing impressive.  My pedi said the same thing, try to give her 1-2oz of water twice a day between feedings as EBF babies sometimes just need a little more liquid.  She said as long as she's not uncomfortable, running a fever or if the gas stops (she's having some stinky gas) to call back.  She said as long as there is gas moving and she's still eating not to worry as EBF babies absorb a lot of what they eat.

  • My DD doesn't go everyday & often it's just a little tiny bit for many days on end...then it's a big blow out.  I remember how much I stressed for my DD#1 but now I barely even notice w/ kid #3.  If your LO isn't miserable or sick or acting weird it's probably fine.

  • DD only pooped once every two weeks (about 14 days) from three months to six months (when we started solids).  Pedi said not to worry about it as long as she wasn't showing any other signs of discomfort/illness.
