Wearing him too much?

DS is a really good sleeper during the day and I wonder if now, at just shy of 2 months old, we should be worrying about how much sleep he's getting during the day compared to at night.

He's been getting up every 2 hours or so every night with the exception of the first stretch which is about 3 - 3 1/2 hours.  Some nights (esp if he needs a diaper change) he can be awake at night for anywhere from 45 min. to (last night) 3-4 hours. :(

During the day I'd say he's awake anywhere from 45 min - 1 1/2 hours before he's napping again and yesterday he was napping, woke up to eat, and went back to sleep!

He has reflux (pretty severe I think since it's been a week on Prevacid and he's still irritated with it and spitting up a ton!) so often times the only way to settle him is to Moby him.  I feel like this is our answer to everything.  Fussy baby (if we know he's eaten, changed, etc) and he goes in the Moby.  The problem is, it's not more than 15 min and he's asleep in it.  Sometimes sooner.

Is it even possibly to wear them too much if they begin sleeping to much while being worn? I feel like he won't sleep if he's not truly tired , but then I wonder, if I WASN'T wearing him at said point in time, I know he would not be asleep then.  My mom jsut suggested that maybe he's sleeping too much during the day, but I have no idea really.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Re: Wearing him too much?

  • Seems doubtful to me that you culd wear him to much at this age.

One thing to try would be putting him in the moby facing out.  DS loved this.  I had to support his chin with my hand all the time, of course, but he tended to calm down but stay awake.  Another thought is a walk in the stroller.  I read a study showing that some sunlight in midday helps infants regulate their sleep at night.  So every day around lunch DS and I would go on a stroller walk, so he could be propped upright a bit and get some sunshine.

I would guess it is more likely that either A.  He is a typical breastfed 2 month old who doesn't sleep long stretches or B. his reflux bothers him at night so he doesn't sleep as well.

Hopefully you can address B fairly soon by adjusting his meds as needed.  Have you also thought about messing around with your diet?  In retrospect I really should have tried eliminating some food from my diet as I thinkDS's fussiness and sleep issue were in aprt due to food sensitivities.  At the tiem I was an overwhelmed new mom and the thought of not eating all those yummy foods was just too much for me to handle.

  • Have you tried upright sleeping for DC at night?  Your DC may prefer being in the moby because it does not hurt as much as laying flat on their back (imagine laying down flat on your back with heartburn).  Being up 3 to 4 hours at a stretch at night seems too long for a baby that little to me, I would think DC is uncomfortable in some way.

Have you tried letting DC sleep in a swing, bouncer or car seat?  Also they make wedges that incline babies in cribs (or cosleepers), that may help as well.

Edit:  I don't think you are wearing DC too much.  It is impossible to spoil a baby by holding them too much.  I do think that you can think about how you could make DC's night time sleep more like his daytime sleep.

  • Thanks everyone.  Yeah I guess sleeping during the day is probably more comfortable.  We let him tummy sleep now that he can move his head back and forth (and we co sleep w/ an Arm's Reach, not bed sharing anymore b/c of switching to tummy sleeping).  We tried elevating him on his back and he will simply just not sleep on his back.at all. He also won't sleep in the bouncer, swing, or car seat :(
