Roadtrip with 7 week old?

Maybe I am a bad mom, but I never thought anything of it.  DH and I are going up to visit the rest of my family this weekend and we plan on driving.  We love road trips and we don't want to pay for plane tickets.  It is about 800 miles so it will take 12-15 hours.

DS is 7 weeks old today.  I realize it isn't going to be a walk in the park with changing him and feeding him...but does this make me a bad mom?  My dad and his wife think we are insane and keep telling my younger sister that they think I am making a mistake and am a bad mother for it...

WDYT?

TIA!!

  • I don't think that makes you a bad mom at all.

It's not like traveling via plane doesn't have its drawbacks, too.

  • Um.  I think your dad and his wife are morons for even saying such a thing... especially your dad.  What a butthole thing to say about your daughter.

Anyway, no.  I don't think that's crazy.  I would do it but we also like road trips and we WILL be making a 1000-mile road trip at Christmastime when we drive up to MI to be with family.  Nobody has called me a bad mother for it... and if they did I would have to punch them in the face when I got there.

  • I'd do it in a heartbeat.  Yeah, it may take longer, stopping to feed and change, and just getting him out of the carseat for a bit, but, IMO, this is the time to do it, while they're still sleeping so much, not when they're a toddler and have so much energy!

  • If that makes you a bad mom then I'm a horrible mother as we took DD on an 18 hours roadtrip at 2 1/2 weeks old and came back 3 weeks later. Your LO will probably sleep most of the time, just make sure you stop about every 3 hours or so for some time out of the carseat. Have a great time!

  • I took my DD on a 6 hour trip when she was 6 weeks.  She was a perfect traveler! :)

  • We did trips at 4, 5 and 6 weeks it was only bad when he had a growth spurt and wanted to eat every hour on the trip at 4 weeks it sucked cause we had to keep stopping I learned how to pump while riding in the back seat with DS and feeding him a bottle it wasn't fun but at least we could get somewere.  We have found that it adds 10 min for every hour a trip normally took so you might want to think about the added time.  Our trips were 400-650 miles each way.

  • If that makes you a bad mother, then I'm right there with you.  We just did the exact same thing last weekend when DD2 was 7 weeks.  We took a 12 hour trip to AR and she did just fine with all of it.  Just a warning that if your ds likes to sleep in the car, he might be up a little more at night but it wasn't unbearable for us.  If you can leave at night, it does make it a little bit easier since you may not have to stop as much.  We left at night on the way there and left in the morning on the way back and the way there was a little easier as we didn't have to stop as much.  Enjoy your trip!

  • I think it is totally fine to travel that far with your LO! We drove from VA to AL when my DS was 8 weeks old (we split it into 2 days). I was extremely nervous about it at first but it turned out fine. There were a few meltdowns (1 on the way and 1 on the way back) but that was it. GL!
