Reflux Moms Please Help

Carter has really bad reflux and I have no idea what to do to make him feel better.  Our daycare just called to tell me that he isn't keeping any of the milk that I sent with them down.  So far I guess he has spit up at least 4 ounces.  They said that when they burp him he will let out a tiny burp and then all the milk comes rushing out.  He does this at home too but never to this extent.  I'm guessing that some of the problem might be because I breastfeed at home and obviously he has to have bottles at daycare.  We have been using Playtex Drop-Ins.....I wonder if another type bottle might help?

We started out on Nexium and that didn't seem to help.  He is now on Prevacid tablets (1/2 disolving pill) twice a day.  He has been on that for a week now and obviously that isn't helping either.  We have his two month appointment tomorrow so I will discuss with the Dr. our next steps.  At his appointment last week I was told the next thing to try would be for me to eliminate dairy for a week to see if he has a milk protein allergy and to put him on two bottles a day of Nutrimigen.

Did any of you have sucess with Prevacid over Nexium?  Different bottles??  Speciality formula like Nutrimigen??

Re: Reflux Moms Please Help

  • My nephew was horrible with reflux (I nannied him from infant to toddler). Dr browns helped with feedings as it kept him from getting too much air. It still would happen but the Dr Browns helped a lot. Eventually he needed to be switched to a prescription formula from his pedi (sorry I do not recall what it was) which helped a super lot. He was a new baby after that. Worth mentioning to your pedi though!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • My little guy had days like that too.  He started off on Zantac and then moved to prilosec.  But those meds don't help with the spit up, they just make it less painful when it comes back up (neutralizes the stomach acid).  So we never saw any improvement in the volume of spit up with the medication.  And he would have some days where he would do great (just little bits of spit up each feed), and other days like you described where he was like a little volcano, and we would all be soaked having to change our clothes multiple times each day.  He was a little peanut, but always gained weight, just only in the 10th percentile, so we never pursued the milk protein allergy.

We always used either Dr. Browns or Born Free with the slow flow nipples, and that helped with gas.  Can they try to pace him a little more when eating - stop him every 1/2-1 ounce and burp him, making him eat over a longer period of time?

My little guy only really got better when he was >6months and I stopped breastfeeding.  I don't know whether it was just the age, or whether it was something with breastfeeding, but he is much better now - still spitting up, but not as bad.

Good luck!  I know how frustrating it is...I would say all the time - I worked so hard to get that milk, why can't you just keep it down???

The Nutrimigen AA formula is a prescription one - my Dr. already gave me the script in case we needed to go that route.  Thanks for the positive feedback that it helped.  Guess it is something that we may have to consider using - will make me sad to not be able to EBF but I have to do what is best for my little guy.  Thanks for the Dr. Brown's advice too - those are what my brother used for my nephew and they seemed to work well for them too.

  • Also big fan of dr. brown's here!  DS is on zantac and that helped but what really did the trick, a formula switch to similac sensitive rs.  He was on a very thick formula as a preemie and one week after switching to regular formula his reflux started.  (Duh) took us a little while to figure out he needed a thicker formula and once we switched to that he's been fine.  No more arching, red face, or wet burps.  GL!

  • What really help DD was the regular Nutramigien Mixed with 2 teaspoons of cereal per ounce of Milk/Formula Talk to the pedi about thinkening it with the cereal

  • DD had awful reflux .... but the "silent" kind. She hardly ever threw up, just didn't like her bottles at all. She was on prevacid and did fine .... but we also took her to a Pedi GI Doctor and they gave her Reglan, which helped some.

    GL!

  • Is your LO in Pain from the reflux or just spitting up? Does he arch and scream during feedings? I ask because no drugs stop the spitting up, they just stop the burning..

Make sure he's getting a slow nipple and definitly try a colic reducing one like avent, dr. browns or born free..

He cries and grunts while eating and then afterwards acts fussy, his face gets bright red and will straighten his legs out super tight followed by pulling them in really close to his body.

  • Are they taking the air out of the playtex dropins? That made all the difference with E

The other thing is this.... I have to suspect that although it LOOKS like he is spitting up the entire bottle, that is unlikely. I used to tell our pedi GI that E spit up the whole bottle and she told me again and again that 1tbs looks like 3 ounces when it comes flying out of the babies mouth... Do they have a scale? Can they weigh him before and after? Are they keeping him upright and not lying him down after? Are they feeding him in an upright position?

And prevacid can take 7 days to work, and it is not designed to eliminate spit up. It can help, but doesnt take it away.

We eventually went to neocate formula (script) and then weaned to alimentum and then to gentlease. E has a MSPI, so the broken down proteins in gentlease made a difference for him.

Good luck, I know it is sooo hard.
