i find the carseat/carrier option too heavy. i have a bad back. what other options are there? can a baby go in a regular stroller? i thought they couldn't, but what else would you use?

There are some that are suitable for newborns. If you go that route, I suggest going straight to a convertible carseat. I hated the infant seat and definitely done without it.
A lot of regular strollers have an infant insert...extra padding for a really little one.
This is true, but for the first few months baby really needs to be in a carrier. You could try a Snap N Go option, which is the frame stroller, to snap the carrier into (not sure how much a difference it makes, but it is lighter).

I think the lightest weight option for you would be something like the Graco SnugRide infant car seat (not the SnugRide 32) in the Graco SnugRider frame. The car seat is 7.5 pounds, and the frame is 15 pounds. You'd be hard pressed to find a car seat + frame (or stroller and car seat adapter) combo that weighs less than that.

What are you talking about? There are people that live in the city that don't have cars..why would they buy a carseat? Lots of people put a baby right into a stroller.
OP...if you don't want to take the carseat in and out of the car, you could buy a snuzzler for your stroller. It will cradle the baby more. Just make sure the stroller you buy has several reclining positions and can recline almost flat for the infant period.
The baby jogger city mini is pretty lightweight, as is the quinny buzz. I just don't know how far they recline, although I am getting the city mini double and each side reclines almost to flat. I would imagine the single does too.

I've read that if you plan to put an infant less than 6 months old in a regular stroller, the stroller should be able to recline almost all the way back.
I have a herniated disc and have for the past two years. I have the Graco Loghtweight Travel System. The stroller only weighs 7lbs. It is very light compared to other strollers. I would highly recommend this one if you have a bad back, and I would even if you didn't. We have used this stroller for the past 2 1/2 years and it still works great and we will be using it for this baby too. Graco has awesome customer service as well. I have the Graco Sungride (not the Snugride 32) and it isn't that heavy either. I could carry around DS and he was 10lbs when he was born. I would check them out.

Huh?
So up until the last 10-15 years, when infant seats became the norm, parents were doing it all wrong? I very much disagree.
There are plenty of strollers that are rated for newborns. They have flat reclines. Phil & Ted, Maclaren Techno are a few that come to mind. Or you can just wear your baby.
Plenty of parents (GASP) don't even buy an infant seat to begin with, and the baby goes right from the car seat to the stroller or parent's arms.
