Belly sleeper?

This weekend Olivia learned how to roll from back to belly.  So now she sleeps on her belly.  this has me terrified.  She should be old enough that this is ok right?  I can see her on the video monitor and I keep thinking her face is smooshed in the mattress but when I check on her it isn't.  Anyone else have a belly sleeper that can tell me not to worry??

Re: Belly sleeper?

  • Our little ones are the same age-- J started rolling at 4 months and started belly sleeping at 5 months.  So he's been belly sleeping for a month and a half and he's ok.  I used to worry but now I realize how strong he is.  It didn't matter how many times I rolled him back to his back; he would still end up on his belly.  You know what they say-- as soon as they've perfected rolling both ways, their risk goes way down.  Congrats to Olivia for her rolling milestone!  I'm sure it was fun to watch!

  • Keaton just learned to roll from back to belly recently.  The last couple nights, he has been rolling over to his belly to sleep.  I worry too but I know he has excellent head control and that I can't stop him from rolling if that is what he wants to do.  I honestly think he sleeps better on his belly and will sleep longer.  That is always a plus in my book.
  • Once Connor was able to roll onto his belly, that was the only way he slept.  Once they can roll, then its ok because they can also move their head freely enough.  Dont worry, she's probably more comfortable now :)
  • When E first rolled to his belly to sleep I worried too.  I went in and moved him to his back a few times only to have him go right back to his belly.  He was strong enough so I worried less.  Sometimes he falls asleep with his face straight down into the mattress and that freaks me out so I still make sure his face is turned.

  • Both of mine have done it, too. I definitely worried with both, but ditto the others - once they could get themselves back and forth I couldn't do much about it. Plus, I definitely think they've both been happier to sleep on their bellies, so that makes me happy for them:) It's so hard not to worry!!
  • Brynne sleeps on her belly and it is the best thing that ever happened to us! Prior to, we were up 10+ times a night (literally) to give her a pacifier, rock her, calm her, etc. The first time she rolled to her belly, she slept the whole night. For a few weeks she would roll to her belly everynight regardless of how I laid her down. Often times she would end up with her face smashed against the side of the crib. I started laying her on her belly to start to keep her from getting squished up against the side.  When I lay her down, I just make sure that she turns her head to the side. I check her again before I go to sleep as well. We're getting our sleep and so is she!!

  • I agree with the ladies!  Once Eli could roll onto his stomach, that is where he stayed haha.  Just wait, their sleeping positions get really funny haha.
