How does cervadil work?

I know what it does (helps you dilate, correct?) but what exactly is it? A pill? Gel? Do you get it in the hospital or do they put it in, let you go home and then come back the next day? Excuse my lack of knowledge please!

Re: How does cervadil work?

  • It's a pill on a little string, they put it behind your cervix, take it out after 12 hours, repeat ect......

Once your cervix is favorable, they would start pitocin.

At our hosp, you have to be an inpatient while receiving this medication.  HTH!

Yup; at our hospital they will have you come in at night and they will put the Cervadil in and give you an Ambien so that you can rest while it works.  Hopefully by morning your cervix will be happy and they can start the Pitocin.  If not, it's usually another round of Cervadil.

  • It's intended to help your cervix thin out (i.e. increase effacement), NOT to help dilate you. That said, sometimes dilation does happen... with DD, I dilated from 1cm to 4cm on Cervadil alone.

From the quick glimpse I got of it, it just looked like a piece of paper. It definitely wasn't a pill, nor was it drippy like gel. Then again, there was a LOT of stuff dripping down there in general (the joys of labor), so maybe I just didn't notice the extra dripping from the Cervadil Smile

I had to stay in the hospital once it was inserted, because I had to be on continuous fetal monitoring while it was in. But I've heard of women going into the hospital, having it inserted, and then going home and coming back the next day. Just depends on the doctor and the hospital, I guess.
