Pregnant after a Loss

What will/does LO call Grandparents?

My parents cannot decide what they want to be called when LO is old enough to call them something.  Mallory is their first grandchild.  My dad is of the opinion that she'll come up with something on her own to call him which is true I'm sure.  My mom thinks she wants to be called Nanny or Nana but that seems sort of old for her...she's a pretty hip lady!  What will/does your LO call Grandparents?

Re: What will/does LO call Grandparents?

  • LO will call my parents Nana & Grandpa. Not sure about DH's.

  • They will let her call them what she comes up with, but most likely just grandma and grandpa.  Right now they are known as Grandma (name) and Grandpa (name) by other kids in the family anyways.

  • I saw a pretty thorough list on grandparents.com a while ago.

  • We have lots of family and both of DH's parents have remarried, so we are trying to figure everyone on his side of the family out.  My side of the family is easier, there is only my mother and baby will call her "Abuela". In fact, all my side of the family will be given a Spanish honorific (my mom has a bunch of sibings and cousins and such and my abuela is still alive).

  • Both my parents and DH's will be grandma and grand daddy.

  • We sort of went through this with Isaac... my mom is Mom-mom and my stepdad is Grandpa Jim. My dad is Pop-pop and my stepmom is Grandma Mia. My MIL is grammy and my step-father in law is Grandpa Jack. My FIL is Grandpa. Baby girl will follow suit. :)
  • My parents are Nana and Bumpa (a name created by my cousin)

DH's parents will be grandma and grandpa

But things get tricky with DH's birth Mom. I am thinking that she will be Grandma Kathy but I am not sure since we have a niece that will be about 8 months older than our LO.

  • My FIL wants to be called grandfather and MIL Grammie Rose.  My mother also likes Grammie, but I don't know that she'll put anything after it. My father is still up in the air.

  • DH's mom will be Nene (pronounced like nuh-nuh) which is what she called her grandmother. Not sure about DH's dad. My SIL on DH's side is having a baby in January, and he will be their first granchild.

My mom is grandma, my stepmom is Eema (Hebrew for mother), and my dad is Pops.

  • My mom will be called Mimi (since Grandma and Nana sound too old for her).  My dad will be called Papa or Baba.  And my MIL has not decided yet.

  • I just asked my mum this last night.. she is fine with whatever, so I think i'll call her Nana - like I did with grandparents.  My dad passed away 5yrs ago, but I'm still SUPER close with his partner and LO will call him Pappie.. DH's parents will assume the names all the other kids on his side already call them; Granma and Grandpa

  • My parents haven't decided what they want to go by yet.  DH's mom will probably go by the chinese word for grandmother but for the life of me I can't remember what that word is right now.

  • Grandmamacita and Gordo Papi : ))

For my IL?s probably just abuelita/o

  • This has not come up yet with my mother or my MIL.  But to be honest, I think it should be whatever the little one can say  :)   For some reason it bugs me when a grandparent doesn't want to be called Grandma or Grandpa.. because afterall, that is what they are!   My mother is 65 ... she may be hip and young at heart, but she's definitely of grandmother age.  Our child will be her first grandchild.  Since my mother is Peruvian and my MIL is Croatian (and they both live in their home country and speak their native language) I think that my mom will go with Abuela, which is Spanish for grandmother, although I can see that being tough and the little one saying "ela" for short... when I was little and even later in my life, while she was still alive, I called my maternal grandmother Abuelita in Spanish and Grammy in English.

  • DH's parents are gaga and papa--- the first grandchildren created those names. My dad, who is new at the grandparent thing has decided he is going to be GP, he says its much hipper and doesnt make him feel as old as grandpa...hes nuts!

  • DD calls Dh's parents Oma and Opa, and my parents are Bapa and Bamma, but only b/c Gr is hard to say.
  • We've got Oma and Opa (Dutch) on both sides so we'll have to figure out how to differentiate them.  Probably go with Oma L and Oma H or something.
