I just don't understand...(carseat related)

My parents received 2 used carseats from different friends.  One is expired and the other is still usable and in fantastic condition.  However, BOTH carseats with pretty much completely disassembled.  I'm not talking to the way they were when the box was opened...I'm talking in addition to that ALL the straps were pulled out.  WTF???  Why would you do that?  It just makes is difficult for the person (ME) who now has to put each and every strap back in its rightful place.

Vent over!

  • I don't think I'd even use them...

  • The one that is in great shape is only 1 year old and has never been in an accident.  My dad called the fire dept and they'll inspect it when he brings it in to be installed in his car.  It's going to be the Grandma and Grandpa carseat.  I've already warned my parents of the possibility that the person who inspects the seat may say it's unusable, so they shouldn't be unprepared for that.  They're huge fans of acquiring EVERYTHING second hand.

  • I wouldn't use them either.  Even if it's just a grandma/grandpa seat.  Your kid is still in it and you never know when an accident will occur.
  • Ok, maybe I'll talk to them about it.  They're so hard understand things like this, since back when we were young carseats weren't the norm.

    ITA!

  • Taking the straps all the way out is the only way to wash them.  They should have put them back, though!  My brother gave me their seat and washed all the straps and everything.

  • I agree they were probably being nice and washing the straps.  If they are in great shape, no accidents, and from somebody you know, I don't see the issue in putting the straps back on, having it inspected and using it.  Its not like the car seat is in pieces- its been cleaned for you.   You can download user manuals off the internet and see how the straps go back on if you can't have the original owners do it.

  • I'd say use them.  They work just fine if they've never been in an accident.  Why waste more $$ on new ones that are the exact same?  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!  As long as they pass inspection, go for it!

I did plenty of research on this and the reason they expire after 5-6 yrs is because better SAFER things have become available... don't you want your kid to be safe??

I didn't realize this.  Well, that makes sense then.  I have the original user manual, so I was able to put them all back into place.  Thanks!

I obviously want him to be safe.  I said earlier in the thread that the seat that is not expired is only 1 year old.  That leaves 5 years of time before it expires (per that carseats specs), so he'll have grown out of it by then.  I would NEVER use an expired carseat!
