health insurance - anyone else in the same boat?

This probably makes me look horribly horribly unprepared and ignorant, but, has anyone else gotten pregnant without health insurance?  And if you don't/didn't have health insurance, what are you planning on doing?

The deal is this:  We're getting health insurance as soon as DH's boss sends in the paperwork to the insurance company.  We did not expect to get pregnant so quickly.  We just assumed that after going off the pill it may take a while... and we decided that if it happened soon, great, we'll deal with that when it comes.  Well, it's here, and I'm now worired that my pregnancy wont be covered.

Can anyone help ease my mind with this?

  • If it is a group plan and you have no major laps in coverage you should be covered.

  • Lucky for you, PG is not a pre-existing condition, so at the very least, your delivery will be covered.  How long will it take for the paperwork to go through??  You will have to pay for all your doc's appts out of pocket as well as any u/s you may have until you get insurance.  I would be up-front with your doc and tell them that you don't have health insurance right now.  They may be able to put you on a payment plan or find ways to cut your costs.

In the meantime, I would have DH practically stalk his boss to get the paperwork in ASAP.  It adds up fast.

This is what I've always heard from various HR depts.

  • I think it depends on the state. In some states, it is considered pre-existing.
  • You may also want to try Planned Parenthood.  I bet you they would offer lower cost appointments (at least until you get your insurance situation taken care of).
  • The problem is, I haven't had health insurance since May-June (somewhere around there)... I haven't even called the doctor yet because I'm not sure what to do.

There is a healthy kids plan in NH that can cover pregnant women too, but we make too much money for that plan (we don't want a free ride, we just want coverage.. but I thought it would be worth checking out anyway).

To top it all off, the coverage that we will be getting, there is no female OBGYN close by, the nearest is 50 miles away almost and she also has no hospital affiliations with the insurance plan.  Living in the mountains is gorgeous and refreshing to wake up to, but it's not at all refreshing to not have medical care close by.

  • As long as it's group insurance, pregnancy is not a pre existing condition and you should be covered.

  • Good call!!!!  thank you!!

Also, DH suggests not even calling the dr until our insurance is in place and then we can claim that we didn't know we were pregnant... but I'm not sure if he realizes that they will know how far along I am, and i don't really want to lie because I'd like them to know that my periods are regular and everything that is the truth incase something affects the status of our pregnancy!

  • Depending on how much you and DH make, you may qualify for Medicaid if you are uninsured. Hopefully the paperwork will go through ASAP and everything will be fine, but you might want to find out the requirements from your state to see if you qualify just in case.

  • It is my understanding that pregnancy cannot be considered a pre-existing condition (at least it is that way in my area) so you should be fine!

    Congratulations!!!!!

  • FYI. In some states and under some insurance practices, Pregnancy IS a pre-existing condition especially since you have not had insurance in several months.

My BIL lost his job half way through pregnancy and the Cobra payments were insane so my second nephew was born without insurance. They owe over 30,000.00 dollars still (2 years later) for his birth. The good news is, you can make payments, even if its 5.00 bucks a month (though I don't recommend that).

  • My H just started his job on Sept 1. I was worried we wouldn't be covered for the pregnancy because I was already 4 weeks. Found our thru Cigna that I am completely covered, not preexisting it just falls under the other catagories of comprehensive, in patient services, etc. Good luck!
