Rave for Little Urbanites

After doing a ton of research on strollers, I decided that with our lifestyle, this might be something worth investing in.  I do a TON of walking over varied terrain, and we are going to Europe next spring, our current stroller is way too heavy and bulky to take with us. I've seen some really expensive all terrain ones on ebay and craigslist, gently used, for about 1/2 the price.  So I went to go look at some strollers yesterday with DH.

For high end baby stuff, I had only previously been to Segals and Posh Baby and was really underwhelmed with the "customer service" at both places.  I like to shop somewhere were the people are very friendly, and really know their product, and helpful with questions.

I looked at the Bugaboo website and saw a store called "Little Urbanites" on 10th and Lovejoy.  I called and the girl who answered the phone was very helpful.  DH and I drove down, paid for 1 hour of parking, and figured we would grab a slice of pizza after quickly looking at the strollers.

We walked in and were immediately greeted by a woman who was SO nice.  I told her what I was looking for (lightweight, reversible, lots of storage, but great for cobblestone streets), and she suggested a few strollers that fit my criteria.  We pushed them around the store and they were both "ok", but nothing fantastic at all.  So then she went through and explained every single stroller there, trying really hard to match us up with one that would fit our wants/needs.

Then she said "here, take this one and go for a walk with your baby, and see if you like how it handles, there's a cobblestone street about 3 blocks away".  We left our stroller there, loaded DD into the Bugaboo Bee, and went for a long walk.  The stroller was just ok.  Then we came back and she told us to take the Frog for a walk.

(I have to pause here to explain my DH...he HATES spending money.  He is very budget conscious and thinks that it's ridiulous to spend over $100 on a stroller at all, and we were playing with strollers that cost $500-$1000, so the fact that he was even participating was a miracle)

We walked outside and DH started freaking out.  At first, I thought something was wrong!  I said "are you ok??" and he said "I just can't believe how easy this stroller is to push!"  He started laughing and pushing it around, over cobblestones, through grass, sand, over curbs, and laughing in amazement at how well this stroller handles.  It was CRAZY.  I have never seen him like that before!!

Then we walk back into the store and the lady shows us how to fold it, how to rotate the handlebars and how to move the seat, etc.  She was SO helpful.  Turns out her name's Kim, she's the owner.  She's fabulous.

So, if you want a fun baby store to browse in, or are looking for high end stuff (I could never personally afford to buy anything there!), this is a reccomendation, their store is awesome, and the owner is so nice and knowledgable.

And, DH okay'd the purchase of a gently used Frog, now I just have to find the right one!!

  • I agree with you. Little Urbanites has great customer service.  We have friends who often register at Posh and LU, and I always try to stick with LU.  Posh people have no clue about their products.  I've heard the owner is a great person, so I have no idea why she hires such clueless employees.

  • I just looked them up to see what the Bee and Frog both look like. The Bee was recalled in June...I saw good reviews for the Frog, though! Hopefully you can find a reasonable priced one out there!
  • I called Posh and talked to one of the owners about the Ergo and Beco and she was GREAT on the phone.  Then I dragged DH in to try it on with me, and it was horrible!  It was a comedy of errors, basically.  These two girls had no idea how to put an Ergo on someone, we were there for 45 minutes and it was so ridiculous, we left.  Then I called and talked to a manager to give her some feedback, and I don't think she really cared...?  Then I went back in to actually BUY the Ergo and again, it was ridiculous.  I stood at the cash register for about 10 minutes while they all just stood around...It was like "um, can someone ring me up please?  I'd like to buy this product...?"

Anyway, I'm happy with my Ergo, and will be shopping at LU from now on : )

  • To give feedback and get a flippant response is not cool.  Obviously, we weren't able to have a Frog, but they're great for urban adventures.  I've been able to steer one, and it's almost like you're pushing nothing.  I do prefer my Beco to Ergo though.  I could never get the Ergo to fit correctly across my back.  Plus, the Beco patterns are awesome.

I totally agree.  I just expect good customer service, especially at a store that is more expensive than others!!  I tried on the Ergo in store(to replace the Bjorn that is now too small), liked it, then started to put the Beco on, and DD started fussing, and the girls that work there were SO not helpful, so I just said "screw it" and bought the Ergo.  The Beco is very pretty though!!  After talking some more last night,. DH wants to order a new Cameleon instead of the Frog.  Bigger basket underneath, 2 year warranty, great resale value after we use it for 2 years, etc.  I'm so excited.  Now, what color to order??  And we will be ordering from LU, because she was so great!

  • Oh, did you see the special edition Chameleon for the Red campaign?  I think it's denim.  By the way, I highly recomend checking the stroller and using Go-Go Kidz in the airport.  They made our lives so much easier.

  • I did see that!  I think DH wants to get the red, as it 's "safest" bright color for when we are walking at night... we are still undecided though Wink

The GoGoKidz.... still undecided on that... we will be bringing her Scenera carseat to use on the plane (from Grandma's car) and it only weighs like 7 pounds... so we haven't figured out the logistics on the airplane travel part yet.
