? for pumping mamas

Last week I may have had a blocked duct.  Now my breast feels fine, but the only issue I have is when I pump, the nipple on that side gets super huge (larger than before and larger than the other side) and almost looks swollen. It goes back down to normal size after an hour or so, but is very tender to the touch until it does.  I mentioned it to my LC, and we are going to keep an eye on it (it is not thrush or mastitis that we can tell so far).  Is this normal or has anyone had something similar happen?

Re: ? for pumping mamas

  • Did you see/feel the block release (large/strong spray of milk and a sense of relief in your breast)?  If not the block may have moved from your breast and into your nipple.

My blocks were always caused by blebs.  Check your nipple for any dead skin or old milk that has dried over the hole the milk comes out.  Remove the bleb with a clean finger nail or wash cloth.

  • I've had a plugged duct but not a swollen nipple.  It could be that the milk sort of solidified in the duct and is having a tough time coming out of your nipple.  I researched plugged ducts when I had mine and I read that the milk can come out looking kinda stringy and not to be alarmed.  Maybe that's it?  You could try putting a warm wash cloth over your nipple before pumping, that might help loosen it up.  GL!
