  • You can turn it after 1 yr old and 20 lbs.  But, it is still safer to leave it rear facing as long as possible.  DS is still rear facing even though he is well over a year old and 24 lbs.

ditto this.  my pedi told us to keep DS rear-facing for as long as possible.  Our RF weight limit is 35 lbs, so he'll probably stay that way for a while.

  • the AAP recommends rear facing until age 2, although in most cases you can legally face forward at 1 year of age. i know ds would prefer to FF, but we're going to wait to turn him around as long as possible.

  • You will want to check your state laws as well as the what the car seat manufacturers suggests for your car seat.  That said, the general rule is 20 lbs AND 1 year before turning them around.  But it is strongly recommended to leave them rear facing as long as possible (to allow for their neck to fully develop and be strong enough to sustain an accident should you get in one).  Research shows that it is better for them to be rear facing and have their legs a little cramped than to have them front facing and risk damage to their neck should you get into an accident.  Many people on here will tell you they are still rear facing, others will tell you they have switched (we have switched), it really is whatever you feel is best for you and your child.

  • I am also an extended RFer.  DS will be that way until 2 or he has a complete melt down and I cave.
  • I have read that it's 1 year AND 20lbs. We turned DS on his 1st birthday since he was well over 20lbs at that point :o) To each their own though, some people choose to wait longer.

  • Keep her RFing as long as you can.  It could save her life in a bad accident.

  • I turned the day DS turned 1! He was 21.5 lbs. He was so happy. No more screaming and crying. He is totally silent and relaxed now in the car. It is amazing! But I do keep it in the center position for extra safety for side iimpact.

  • I would strongly recommend keeping it rear facing.  DS and I where in a  fairly serious car accident almost 2 weeks ago.  The officer that responded was shocked that DS didn't have any injuries, than he looked in my car and noticed my seat.  He was pretty sure that DS wasn't hurt because it was rear facing.  There was a pretty bad jolt and my neck hurt pretty bad afterwards and DS acted like nothing had happened.  I was on the fence about extend rear facing, DS isn't 1 yet so I still had time to decide.  Now I am full believer in extend rear facing.  I still think what would of happened to him if I had him turned around.
