GD girls, come in

I'm not one to be overly-anxious, or pre-occupied with details..... I believe everything in moderation and all that other calm, cool and collected advice my doctor goes by.

However, today I'm feeling guilty.

I'm very conscious of my sugar/carb intake... i have been very diligent about testing, and keeping my blood sugars within their range.

But for some reason this morning i couldn't hold back and had 3 cookies and a granola bar for breakfast.

For all you GD girls, do you ever have meals/days where you just say F it, and do what you want?

Re: GD girls, come in

  • LOL, more often than I'd like to admit.  My sugars are a little high at least 1-2/wk.  I asked my doc about it last week and he said he pays more attention to the overall results..  his exact words: "No one is perfect and I expect you to give in every now and again."

Like you, I really try to pay attention to what I'm eating and follow my GD diet accordingly.. but I do have my hungry days were none of that seems to matter.  :(

  • I tested "borderline" for GD, so my midwife has been having me watch my sugar intake as well.  I do allow myself little splurges throughout the week, but I really work to balance it with very healthy meals the rest of the time.  I know myself well enough to know that if I were to try to avoid all sugar/sweets, I'd only be setting myself up for binging during moments of weakness, so I look for snacks that can give me the sugary taste I want without packing in a bunch of sugars all at once.

  • Yes, I've had "treat days" where we eat out, or i have something special that I have been craving. I make sure that my numbers have been good all day leading up to whatever it is, and watch my sugars carefully afterwards. I always try to make sure I don't go overboard.

My dr and nutritionist both say that they understand that we're all human, and that I'm pregnant, and there are times when you need a treat or just can't avoid something. the goal is to make those times rare, and that your sugar isn't constantly high all the time.

when I show my #'s at each appointment, i've been told that everything I'm doing is fine, and that's with the occasional high # here and there.

  • I cheat a little but I don't ever go too crazy. I was having a really bad Monday so I caved on a craving of French Fries and a Frosty from Wendy's with my lunch. I tested one hour later and I was at 138. Go figure and my guilt went away. :)

I try my very best to stay with in the carb/per meal counts. If something I eat gets my numbers out of wack I cut back or skip it.

  • Oh yeah.  Once in a while a "bad" meal is not gonna be that big of a deal.  It becomes more of an issue if that "bad" meal turns into a "bad" week or month.

About a month and a half ago I went bananas at Cheesecake factory and it was so worth it.  Smile
