Play kitchens... wood vs. plastic?

What's the obsession with wooden play kitchens?  Do they usually hold up better?  Is it just related to the uber-crunchy no plastic toys mindset?  I know they're sanded and whatnot but I would worry about splinters, especially if they're really rough on it and something breaks.

I'm not in any rush to get DD a play kitchen.  I know she's too young still and we have no room for it as it is.  I'm just curious.

Re: Play kitchens... wood vs. plastic?

  • We'll probably get a wood one.  Partly because of the no plastic thing, partly b/c I think they look nicer.  DD has a wood table and chairs that she LOVES (the set was mine in the 80s) and we've never had an issue with splintering.  If it broke we'd probably toss it, but it's held up quite well.

  • eh, i think a lot of the wood ones are ugly. and most of them seem so boring? there are no bells and whistles to a lot of the wood ones (but thats what some people like)
  • if we doe ver get one then we will probably go wooden as well, but just because it lasts longer. The veggies and accessories will probably get the plastic ones.

  • Personally I tend to like the plastic ones better, most of the wooden ones that I've seen don't look like a lot of fun.

  • We have a hand me down plastic one ( its the cheepest one you can buy) and Ayden LOVES it.  I like the looks of the oplastic better and I feel like they have rounder edges also (incase of accidents)

  • I've never cared for the wooden ones. They have them in a lot of daycares and they seem pretty boring to me.
  • I prefer wood kitchens, and that's what we're getting DS.  They are typically more simple in design, as punk said, but that's what I like about them.  Also, I want it to last and the wood kitchens are made better, IMO.

  • I hear the wood ones are kind of boring.

The plastic ones have more realistic features: stoves that sizzle, microwaves, refrigerators and dishwashers that beep, kitchen sinks with hoses, etc.

I think it depends on your kid...my son hates to play with anything that is a toy and not "real"...has to be a real cell phone, loves playing with real pots and pans, etc.  So I'm pretty sure we'd just be wasting money on a wood kitchen.

  • We have a wooden one. I can PIP it if you'd like. I think it has good features. All of the dials turn, the water faucet turns, etc. I really like it and DD seems to too. I think the plastic ones look cheap, and we wanted this to be a long lasting toy. It may be one of the only things we hang onto for future grandkids.

We also only buy wooden food as well.

  • I was all set to get a nice wooden kitchen that would last forever, yada yada yada.

Then I found a very well maintained Dora Kitchen for 10.00 at a yard sale.  Um yea, SOLD.  DD loves it.
