Brrr!!!! Cold-weather mamas come in

We live in a colder climate (MN) in an older home (built in the 60s). It's stucco with a mix between plaster and Sheetrock walls so we can't really insulate the walls more than they already are, which is NOT very much. We re-insulated the attic and started replacing windows (replaces DS's windows) to keep the house warmer in the winter.

We put DS in a fleece sleep sack, usually with some form of outfit underneath, whether it be footy-jammies (as we call them) or a onesie. When we pick him up in the morning, though, his hands are FREEZING!!!!

What do you do to keep LO warm at night? I've considered getting those newborn mittens for him, but he loves sucking on his hands when he falls asleep. I'm not too worried about his hands being cold, but when DH feels them, he thinks that means DS is cold all over and wants to dress him warmer.

  • Cold hands are NOT a sign of how warm LO's body is.

DS sleeps in a footed sleeper with a crocheted blanket each night. I leave his hands free for thumb sucking. He has been sleeping better since we started doing this instead of the swaddle (10+ hour stretch at night).

Oh, I know. I told DH that last night. I thought that if I could make DS's hands a little warmer, DH wouldn't worry about DS being cold. I was wondering if anyone has any kind of heater just for LO's room or if mittens really work even for babies who want to suck their hands.

I hate to leave a heater on all night because I don't want DS to get too warm, but I don't want DH to keep putting on layer after layer just because DS has cold hands.

The ideal sleeping temperature for babies is 68 degrees. We have our thermostat set at 67 here in South Dakota because that's how DS sleeps best.

  • DD sleeps in a long-sleeved fleece sleepsack over a onesie.  We keep the thermostat at 71, but she has a big window in her room so it is always a few degrees cooler.  Her hands are also cold, but I'm not too worried about it.  Try feeling your own hands when you get up.  Most of the time they are cold to the touch but you don't even notice it.  I think it's probably the same for LOs.
  • oh ya another happy MN mom :) you post a very good question & I am so glad to read the replies as I wonder the same thing.
