How do you get your DC to poop more. DS only poops 1x every 8-9 days. We give him Peptmen Jr with fiber, bolus feed prune juice 2oz and 2oz of water daily and nothing works. We rub his belly to help(it was working for a few but now nothing)
When he passes gas it smells like natural gas or he pooped himself. Then when we check him he is dry but really stinky. TIA for any help
Re: poop questions for you all?(TMI)
My son has a repaired imperforate anus so he gets constipated easily. we give him 1/2 capful of Miralax mixed in his milk or juice. the pedi and his surgeon said it was fine to give to him. we actually have togive it to him daily so that he doesn't get totally backed up. it works wonders. good luck

my son had that too, but his GI dr does not want to give him any stool softers or meds. We did the miralax and that did nothing. I see that you are from MA, me too on the south shore we go to Tufts for his care.
I don't know about your sons medical issues, but both of my children have had constipation problems (my daughter still has severe constipation). How much did you do the Miralax? We use it with my daughter, but if we don't keep up with it every day/every other day, then she gets constipated and doesn't go for days. Using it just once or once in awhile didn't work. Another thought I had was his formula (or is he breastfed?) My ds didn't tolerate milk based formula and his stomache tolerated soy formula much better. If your GI doesn't want you to use stool softeners then did he have any other suggestions?
Hope you can figure out some solutions soon. I know too well how hard it is (and sad) to have a little one who can't poop.
By the way...I am on the south shore too!
we are in southeastern ma so we go to hasbro for his care. his doc said that he may always need to take something to help him and so far the miralax works. is there a reason the gi doesn't want to give him anything? just curious, maybe i should question my son's doc about giving him the miralax.
OH LORD, my 3 yr old has diastrophic dysplasia and we thpught her constipation issues could be caused by her dwarfism (trying to find an answer through anything). We gave her Miralax, Little Phillips, Mineral Oil, Psyllium, Dulcolax, and even enemas, nothing helped and if it did only for a few days then would be ineffective. Every time she had to poop it was constipation, she would get fissures and the whole time she would scream bloody murder, I even had to hold her down and try to "help" her stool pass by pressing on her belly and applying pressure to her exit, which was horrid. After all was done she would be drentched in sweat and tears and just want to be held in my arms and rocked, then she would fall asleep. I felt like a terrible mother. Finally her OT suggested we change her diet:
Little to No - apples, bananas, milk, carrots, and cheese
More - green veggies, whole grains, water, friuts
Soy yogurt instead of regular yogurt
Sherbert or Sorbet instead of ice cream
Brown rice instead of white rice
She's also lactose intollerant so some of these modifications didn't need to be made.
Coming in a little late but we have always dealt with constipation issues with Caleb..
Some things we do/dont do:
DEF no bananas or rice
easy on the dairy
Prunes/prune juice
lots of veggies high in fiber (broccoli, carrots)
lots to drink to keep him hydrated
pear juice
not sure how old he is but get him to "jump"!! Put him in an exersaucer or if he's older, hold him and 'jump' on you bed.. It gets things moving.
as a last resort suppositories
We have tried Miralax but if he is at the point where its been 8-9 days its not going to help. As our ped put it "you gave to get the plug out before he can pass anything" so a stool softener will help on a day to day basis but not when he is already constipated. You would have to use the suppository to get him to go, THEN use the Miralax to soften the stool to help him continue to go..
Good luck! Its awful to watch your child cry in pain when they are trying to poop..
