Specialist question?

Hello all!

My Obgyn has recommended that I go to a specialist (while continuing to see them every month as well) because I am having twins. Some people tell me that they only saw their regular obgyn when they were pregnant with twins. So I am wondering if it is necessary.

What's your take or how did it go while you were pregnant?

Thank you much!

Re: Specialist question?

  • some people are going to tell you that you don't need to see a specialist (MFM or perinatologist) but if your OB is telling you to, then GO. obviously your OB is saying they can't completely handle a high-risk twin pregnancy.

  • I LOVE that your OB is suggesting that you see a specialist also.  Good for her/him!  The person you'd be seeing is called a peri or MFM (same thing) and they are a "super" OB -- more school, more expertise for high risk pgs.  DO IT!!!!

How many twin pgs has your OB handled?  That's another drive for whether you need to see a specialist or not, but really if he/she said you need to see one then you should.

  • If your OB is recommending it, go see a MFM or a peri.

I am primarily dealing with my OB however my MFM reviews and meets with me after each ultrasound and my OB also consults with the MFM after each of my appointments.  My OB will deliver the babies and continue to monitor me but the MFM is kept up to date on my status.

  • I see both. Twins is a high risk pregnancy whether or not you are encountering complications and it always helps to have 2 pairs of eyes.  If your OB says go, why not?  I see both, an OB and an MFM.

  • I see both.  My OB wanted it that way and I'm sure glad she did.
  • Ok! Thank you much ladies!!

  • i went to both a peri and my reg OB starting as soon as we found out it was twins. i agree with everyone else, if your OB recommends it go. heck if your OB didnt recommend it i would insist on going anyway, as everyone has said, twins is considered high risk even with no complications so IMO a special set of highly trained eyes is needed. when it comes to the health of your babies better safe then sorry. most all twins are born early but the longer they stay in the better so extra precautions are needed. go, you wont regret it.
