Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

I'll join the pitty party too. Spent last night at the ER

Colton has the croup. I know, lots of kids get it. I think someone eles kid (Totty maybe??) on here had it a few weeks ago. Call me an idiot, but I had no idea how bad it could be! Anyway, C was fine, we put him to bed at 730, go check on him at 1030, he's struggling to breath--I mean really struggling. I pick him up and he's pretty much non-responsive. So glad I checked on him again. I couldn't get him to wake up, move, nothing. He was just really stuggling. I yelled at Brian and we took him to Cooks. They immediately put us in a room and went to work. Said he has the croup, but because he's already an imuno-suppresed kid it just hit him a little hard. They debated on admitting him but after several hours his oxygen was back up in the range it should be (was in the low-mid 80s, we left and it was back at 96-100)and they decided to let us go home. We are to bring him back if he gets like that again and they will admit him. Kind of feel like they should have kept him. I mean, if you have to think about "should I admit this kid", you probably should. But I'm not a dr.

Just can't believe the croup is so yucky. I always just assumed it was a nasty cold or something.

Since Colton has always been kind of a sickly baby, my biggest fear is that I'll wake up and something will have happened during the night and I won't know until the morning and it'll be too late. I was getting over that fear and now after last night it just kind of put that fear back in my mind again.

Anyway, he seems so much better this morning. Still pretty nasty sounding, but much better.

Sorry this is so long!

  • How scary! Glad he is getting better and I hope he stays that way!

  • How scary!  I, too, fear that something will happen during the night.  DH and I are really deep sleepers and I always hope I wake up if they need me.

I hope C gets to feeling better soon.

  • Sorry to hear that. I agree that croup is very scary especially the first time you hear that barking cough. The second time that Gavin had it turned into pneumonia and I don't think I slept for a week b/c I was so scared he was going to stop breathing. He was never admitted in the hospital but part of me wished he had just to ease my mind that help would be there if needed. I hope your little man gets to feeling better real soon.

Yeah, I knew that cough was not right. The very labored breathing and almost non-responsive was the worst part. I told the ER dr "he has a stange cough, now don't laugh and I know it's not whooping cough, but it's a stange cough like that." She said "oh, he has croup" and then he started coughing like that. And yes, it really sounds like a barking seal!

I'm just glad he's better than last night.

  • That is scary. I am so glad he's doing better.

I swear being a parent has to be one of the scariest jobs ever.
