Buying diapers ahead of time...

Do you rec this?  If so, how do you decide on brand and size and amount?  I'm hesitant in the event that one brand doesn't work and I'm stuck with a crapload of unusable diapers.

Re: Buying diapers ahead of time...

  • If you buy ahead don't open the packages. Most places will let you exchange them for a different size if unused.

  • you can but i would buy the bigger size only. you'll get newborn ones in the hospital but by the time you get home, C may or may not be wearing them anymore so you don't want to have many of those. you will get to take some home with you anyway. even size 1 they can grow out of quickly, esp if he is on the bigger side. if you are going to pre-buy start with size 2 and buy smaller ones when he gets home if you need to.

as far as brand, pampers have a smell that makes me sick to my stomach. huggies are unscented and i have always heard they tend work better for boys most of the time where pampers tend to work better for girls. at costco, huggies by the case are even cheaper than the costco brand (per lilycat). so those are things to consider

  • We did and were stuck with some we didn't like. I don't really recommend it.

I woudl be careful about pre-buying diapers.  It def. depends on where you get them.  I know BRU and Target can be anal about keeping receipts, and usually, the policies are 90 days - so you might not be using them before then.  (and then you are stuck with them - I know BRU does not do no receipt returns anymore).

Unless you just get some great deal or osmething - I would just get them as they grow into them.

the case of huggies is cheaper, but the quantity of diapers is smaller.  The costco brand is cheaper by a fraction of a cent per diaper....

You go through LOTS of diapers at first.  I bought a few packages of newborn and then started working my way up the size chart...  I'd only buy in advance if they are a super deal (like the Walgreens thing a while back where they were $3 a pack or less)...  I might have a pack of NB, and a few packs of 1's...

We like Huggies...  Pampers are soft, but they smell funky...  I found that pampers were fine for boys, but not girls....  We really like the Costco diapers and I am actually willing to pay more for them than the deals I can get on Huggies...  We have had 1 leak in 20 months.... (well maybe like 17 months because Costco doesn't have a NB or size 1)...

  • I rec against it. We had huggies and pampers swaddlers and BOTH made PK break out in terrible diaper rash. We had hell exchanging them at Target due to their 2 returns a year policy bs. (We didn't have a receipt.) We ended up having to use Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers from Newborn to size 2, and those weren't diapers we had on hand. We had to find out what worked best with her and went thru several brands to figure it out. It was a PITA and thankfully we didn't have too many to exchange but I know now not to buy diapers until after our next baby arrives.

Not always...it depends on the size.  Size 3s are cheaper for Huggies.  It is so strange.

Kreeper - I would just stock up on a variety of small packs now when there are good coupons out, then you can try and see which works best for you.

    Same here.

  • I recommend against it. Natalie has never once leaked out of a Pampers or Luvs, but can pee through a Huggies diaper in an hour flat. You never know what'll work best for your baby.

  • I'm stocking up here and there when there is a good deal with coupons/sales.  This time around, there have been a lot more deals on Huggies.  For DS #1, both worked fine as a newborn, and then Pampers worked better for awhile, and then Huggies worked better later on.... so you just never know what brand you are going to like best.  I am mostly getting the small "jumbo" packs, so I'm not out a lot if something doesn't work quite right.  I did get a couple of packages of newborns, a few size 1, and then some bigger.  Even though they send you home with some, they go through them so quickly in the beginning.

CVS and Wal-Mart gave me no problems when I needed to exchange for a different size without receipt.  Target is more particular.

About brands, I do notice that you have to put Huggies and Pampers on a little differently... I also feel like you have to "prep" the Huggies more to avoid leaks (separate certain parts that get stuck a little when folded).  Some kids do have allergy issues with one or the other... hopefully we won't have that with this one.

ETA - I tend to watch babycheapskate.blogspot.com to see when to stock up.

  • This helped a ton! for the first 3 months we did not buy a single diaper for DS when he was born.

BRUS has the buy 8pks and get the 9th free. The huge packs are your best bet. we only had 2 small packs of newborn, and 2 large ones of size 1 and 1 box of 2s.

oh and 2 boxes of wipes. =)

*this was all bought as of 6 months prior and on. I also collected diaper coupons, which helps alot too.

I personally recommend pampers. Huggies leaked, luvs was too rough for his sensative skin.

  • We were given several boxes of newborn diapers which included Pampers, Luv's, Wal-Mart and Huggies for Newborns up to 14 pounds at our baby showers,

We used all of them so far. We did not have any gift reciepts on them but did not have to return any of them fortunately.

We love all of them except Huggies.

We will not buy them at all. I can't tell you how many times Ty leaked with them on and how many we had to go through b/c of it!

We are up to size 1's and just purchased a huge box of Pamper's on ebay of all places and it is so much cheaper than Costco, Sam's and BRU.

I am not sure if you shop ebay but it is worth checking out once your little one arrives.

If you do purchase diapers in advance then I would probably get little packs of newborns and then start getting some boxes of 8-14 pound ones next.

Tyler outgrew the up to 8 pound newborns by week 3.

  • I stocked up before ds got here on whatever I had a coupon for that was on sale.  I bought some newborn but mostly 1's and 2's.

I had several friends who had babies around the same time so we would just swap with each other if one grew out of a size or if one brand worked better than the other.  For the most part we were only trading when ds grew out of diapers.  All brands seemed okay until he was a little older than we found that Luvs worked the best for him.

It was nice not to have to buy diapers for a while.  Now it seems like I am always buying diapers and can never get stocked up!

Hmmmm....we use pampers for both kids so I wouldn't have had any problems stocking up.  I don't smell anything.

  • I didn't buy any ahead of time. The hospital gave us Pampers newborn diapers and we just stuck to those since they fit her well. I bought a small pack of Huggies but they didn't fit right.
