2nd Trimester

Gluclose screen Test Tips...

My midwife told me two 'tips' for the Gluclose test.

1. Take the test as early in the morning as possible

2. Have protein for breakfast, no carbs, no sugar, so no juice and no toast.

3. try to have the majority of your dinner the night before be protien.

She said that the biggest thing is that women just already have sugar in them so that's also why they don't pass the first test.  Just thought I'd pass along the information.

Re: Gluclose screen Test Tips...

  • OK, I'm taking mine in 3 hours, so thank you for the tips!  I had eggs for breakfast, so I think I'm ok there.

  • Maybe I'm way off on this but wouldn't that be cheating the test?  If you normally eat carbs and sugar and you don't just for the test then go back you could potentially have GD and not "know" because you tricked the test.  Like I said maybe I'm wrong but it just seems odd that you wouldn't just eat normal the day before and then fast as usual for the 1hr.  I have heard that there is a "diet" for the 3 hr.

  • You're not "tricking" the test if you don't eat sugar or carbs just before.  The 1-hour test is a very basic screen, with a high rate of false positives.  If you fail the 1-hour, you have to take the 3-hour, which is a more sophisticated test, and generally requires fasting beforehand.

So the OP's advice is good -- there's no reason to be one of the false positives of the 1-hour and have to take the 3-hour, just to find out that you don't actually have GD.

  • I'm not sure about this but my OB specifically said to eat as normal and just not to have a soda or anything like that for 12 hours before the test. He specifically said to have toast before I drink the glucose stuff.
  • i don't think that you can actually 'Cheat' the test.  They are giving you a bunch of sugar water to drink...they are making you have sugar your just not having the sugar before hand is how my midwife described it.

    look at it this way....

If you normally have a bottle of sugar water for breakfast and then the Dr.s give you another bottle of sugar water later that day, then your getting twice the amount of sugar that you normally would in a normal day.  So your just making it so you just have your normal one bottle of sugar water.

I know we dont normally have a bottle of sugar water for breakfast...but it's the best image I could give you.  Again, if the midwife aftually told me this, then I don't think its possible to 'cheat' the test. Take it or leave it, it's up to you, I'm just letting you know what I was told so you can have the info too, if you want it.

Ditto!  My doctor told me to eat normally before the test, but to stay away from really sugary foods like soda.  My appointment is at 8:30am and she told me my normal breakfast of cereal and soy milk was fine.

  • The nurse at my OB's office said not to eat breakfast the day of the test, schedule it early in the morning, and don't do something stupid like eat an ice cream sundae the night before unless I want to go back for the 3 hour test for sure.
  • Thanks! I have mine on Friday. The nurse told me to fast in the mornng before I come in.

I wasn't trying to be mean...just questioning as I had never heard to alter your diet.  Sorry if you took me the wrong way but there's no need to get bent out of shape.
