What do/did you do for LOs nurses?

Hello!

I'm just wondering what everyone did or does to show the NICU nurses they are appreciated?

TIA!!

Re: What do/did you do for LOs nurses?

  • We took in treats once a week:  cookies, cupcakes, soft pretzels, water ice, brownies, fudge, candy.

  • I baked them cookies a time or two.  A week after DD was home I went back and dropped off a card with a very heart-felt letter in it and a huge bag of different flavored coffees, teas, hot chocolate mixes and snack mixes.  I still send them pictures every so often.  On DD's 1 year birthday I donated a bunch of preemie clothes to the NICU (not DD's actual preemie clothes because I couldn't part with them - I found a bunch on sale) and gave them a card with pictures and of course, more homemade cookies!  Oh, and on Christmas last year, I sent restaurant gift cards to 2 of our very special, favorite primary nurses.  (I sent it to their home address that way I wouldn't be offending the other nurses that didn't get one.)
  • I was there so often and then had a 3 y/o at home, I just never got to doing anything.  However, I plan on visiting this Christmas with goodies galore!  As well as some nice bath and body works antibacterial lotions and goodies.

  • clyoungsey's idea of the antibacterial lotions/washes is an idea I thought would be fabulous and had planned on putting some in my gift bag to the nurses, but then I heard one of the NICU nurses mention that they weren't allowed to wear anything with fragrance while they work.  Just something you might want to keep in mind.

Good point!  I also knew they didn't allow any food on the floor, which is another reason I never baked anything.  But if I go back as a visitor, I will take it to the staff lounge.  I know that the lotions may not work at work, but I know my hands are still raw from all the hand washing I am doing, so maybe they could use it at home too.

  • i have brought cookies and baked goods a time or two and when james goes home i am going to get a gift for his primary nurse as a thank you but im not sure what i am going to get yet. she is a single mom so i was thinking maybe a gift card somewhere
  • I do baked goods frequently and I'm currently writing notes for nurses and drs that have really gone out of their way.  I plan on getting something for my primaries-tickets, gift cards, that kind of thing

  • We brought snacks in all the time, once I got a 5lb bag of coffee beans and a grinder for the break room (made a card with a note about the nurses needing caffeine as much as the babies do!)

And before we left, I made these for everyone:

On the back, it says: "You are, to us, a Sharpie. Over the last 12 weeks... you have left an indelible mark on our hearts. You are a permanent part of our prayers. You will forever be thought of fondly. You have made a lasting impact on our family and for that, we thank you. There's a special place in Heaven for NICU nurses. Always, The P Family, Jamie, Lizz and Maxwell" and then at the bottom, there's a link to my blog so they can keep up with Max if they're so inclined.

  • we took food a couple of times. One time it was a giant basket of pastries. Another time, I made a couple of baskets with cookies, muffins and candy from Sam's.

I also wrote a note to thank all of them.
When we left, I wrote specific notes to my favorite people.

  • After Hanna came home we made a large basket of goodies and DH too up to the nurses.  They really appreciated it.  We are FB friends with some of the nurses and so we still keep in touch with them.  We plan to take Hanna to visit soon.
