Eye crusted shut...

My baby is 9 days old.  She has had watery eyes for the past couple of days, but this morning woke up with a crusted eye that would not open.  I have tried a warm wash cloth and it helps for a little bit, but then eventually it crusts back up.  She cannot open it very well right now and I feel so bad for her.  I am going to call the doctor in the morning.  Any advice??

Re: Eye crusted shut...

  • No advice, I am sorry! Maybe a clogged tear duct?

  • My son had this and our pediatrician said that something was irritating his nasal passages(either allergies or the heat coming on in the house). We have been using a humidifier at night and saline in his nose and that has helped tremendously. But, in the meantime we just had to keep wiping the goo off...
  • At a couple weeks old my LO woke up one morning with one of her eyes swollen and a little crusty. I took her in and the pedi said it was a clogged duct. He said to wipe with a warm washcloth and that it could happen every now and then because their ducts are so small right now. You should have it checked though because you never know, it could be something else. Also her pedi said if the "gunk" or crustiness was ever green to definately take her in.
  • Sounds like a blocked tear duct to me.  Warm compresses, massage, talk to your ped.  My daughter had one when she was born.  Makes the eye prone to infection, so keep a watch out for redness and pus.

Same here too. . . exactly.  But our pedi gave us eye drops because the crusty stuff was a little yellow and he wanted to be sure to take care of any bacteria that may be in there.

This,  My LO had the same thing...the pedi also gave us drops to use and said that if it didn't clear up by his first birtday then they would do surgery...but he said it rarely gets to that point in most kids.  If it still continues to do it, ask for the drops.

  • My baby had some gunk in one of his eyes, the doc said it was a blocked tear duct.

He had me put a warm cloth on it for several seconds (maybe 30 seconds), wipe the eye clean with the warm cloth, and with a clean finger, massage the area outside of the inside corner of the eye, and upper part of the nose to help work out the blockage.  He said it could continue to be blocked for weeks, but after 2 days we had no trouble with it.

He did say if it got thick/green/mucousy it was infected...

  • Thanks everyone!  No, just a lot of yellowish crust...

We were told the same.  In addition, you can take your finger and gently push the fluid along the lower lid toward the inside corner of the eye.  This should bring out the tears.

  • DS had this from the time he was like a week old until about a week ago. It was a clogged tear duct and all we could do was wipe it with a warm cloth very often. The pedi said that we could get a prescription if it got worse, but not to worry unless it was red or inflamed.
  • No big deal. Probably a blocked tear duct. My pedi actually said that breastmilk is one of the best healers, and to put a very small drop on the tip of your clean finger (pinky worked best for me), then to massage the inner eye (right where the tear duct would be) with the breastmilk for about 10 seconds. She said to do that once a day, and then to massage it with a clean finger five or so more times a day. It cleared up in two days, then came back. We did the same thing again and it cleared up again in two days and hasn't been back since. Good luck!
