Preemies

Question about weight gain

Hi Ladies!

My sister's LO was born at 34w and weighed 4lbs 9oz. When she left the hospital a week later she was down to 4lbs 5oz. She is now 2 months old and is just over 5lbs.

I was wondering what the typical weight gain is for a preemie?

TIA!

Re: Question about weight gain

  • That sounds like a fairly low weight gain to me, especially considering the gestational age. My preemie gained half a pound a week for the first 6 months and slowed after that (weight stats are on the right side of my blog). My boy was 3lb, 2 oz at birth and just under 7lbs by 2 months (and that was after a very serious illness). But as long as she is going to regular doctor's appointments, I'm sure if she isn't concerned, its nothing to get too alarmed about yet.

  • I think our son averaged about 2/3 of an ounce gain per day, if that helps!  I think typical weight gain at that age is closer to 1 ounce per day.
  • While in the NICU he was gaining at least an ounce a day, at home, near the same.  He went from 4 lbs at birth to 11lbs 15 oz at his 4 month check up.
  • an ounce per day is good for a lbw infant.  your sister needs to talk to her pedi.
  • My DD is what the doc calls  failure to thrive, she has been on cereal added to the formula since she was a month old, She is now 7 months old and just now 15lbs. Pedi sent us to a GI doc at 2months she is still not gaining the "average" but she is gaining.
  • Are you breast feeding or bottle feeding? DD weighed 1lb 4oz when she was born and now at 5 months (adjusted age 2 months) she weighs 10.5 lbs. She is on a high calorie formula and gaines about 2lbs a month.
