Got my own place!

Ever since I left my ex I have been staying with friends (about 7 weeks), yesterday I got the keys to my new apartment. I still have to get my furniture in there but I am really happy that I have my own place now. I feel like I can really get ready for the baby. It is only a 1-bedroom because I needed the least expensive place I could find so baby won't have his/her own room. Still it will be nice to have my own space and not have to answer to anyone, this is the first time I will be truly on my own (no roommates, husband or family members) at least until baby is born.

The one thing I am wondering is that if I stay in this apartment until my enlistment in the navy is up the baby will be two and a half, does it seem unrealistic for me to share a room with him/her for the first two and a half years?

Re: Got my own place!

  • I don't really think it's unrealistic. Toddlers don't really spend  a lot of time in their rooms anyway, it'll be his/her nap/sleep place and the living room or whatever can be your play place and relaxing place.

    Also, con-freaking- grats!! :D

  • First off, Congrats!! Thats fantastic! Second, it might be. I guess it would depend on their personality. I personally wouldn't want to because I know I wouldn't sleep well and I like my own space. Others, that might work out great. Either way GL!!

  • Congrats! That is so exciting for you. As for the room sharing, my nearly 3 y/o DD has her own room that she hardly spends any time in and she sleeps in my bed every night, so you will probably be fine. Even if you don't cosleep, you will be used to each other and all the little idiosyncrasies of each other and sharing a room probably won't be a problem.

  • Yea on your own place. I'm living with my parents right now trying to save up money for my own place. I can't wait till I get my own apartment.

  • Congrats! I don't think it's a bad thing sharing a room with your LO. I still share a room with my DS and he's 3 yr old. He goes to bed way before i'm ready to and also takes naps without me in there. I've never had a problem with it. Hopefully he will get his own room soon, but i'll be sharing a room with LO the first year lol.
  • congrats on the apartment!!

I am currently sharing a room with my LO and my lease is up at the end of Feb - she will be nearly 6 months old them.  The worst thing I've noticed - at least as a baby - is that ever little grunt, cough, squeek i'm up and checking on her.  The same way, I can't let her just cry it out.  when my lease is up, i will be looking for a 2 bedroom if for no other reason than a place for all her stuff!

i should also say though we don't co-sleep.  the room is very large and we have "split it" so her crib is on the complete opposite side of the room from the bed - like 10-15 feet and we don't use a bassinet or cradle.  there has only been 1 night where she hasn't slept in the crib - and it was because she had a nasty diaper rash and it hurt her to lay down so she slept on me in a recliner.

  • I think you can do the room sharing. A lot of people have. Congrats on getting your own place!
