Gassy baby...please share your expertise!

Liam has been up all night for a week with painful gas!  We started giving him Mycilon on Tuesday night but that doesn't seem to have done anything...he's had about 4-5 doses a day...not sure if I should up that to the full 12...

Went to pedi who suggested a few things including eliminating coffee/chocolate/dairy from my diet.  Unfortunately I didn't think to ask her why those would suddenly be bothering him when I'd been eating them like mad for 3 months with no problems...  Does anyone know whether a child can suddenly become sensitve to these things?

Part of what is contributing to this madness is his transition to daycare, but the bad sleep started prior to that so I don't think it's completely the result of daycare...

Anyone have success with Colic Calm?

  • Has his schedule changed?  Does he go to sleep sooner after eating than before?  He might just need more "up" time to let the food settle before being laid down.  Does he spit up too or just get gassy?  After he eats try to bicycle his legs and get the gas out before it becomes a problem.

  • I have never used Colic Calm, but we used Gripe Water and I honestly am not sure if it really made a difference or not, it would be worth a try.

My boys were really colicky. When I was still bf'ing I had them at the pedi's office and she was asking me about my diet and she mentioned things like broccoli and beans possibly causing gas too. I had no clue and didn't realize but I had been eating chili for a couple days prior to that.

Yeah, that totally makes sense...I just can't think of anything new that I've had that would be bothering him...

    thanks everyone...keep the suggestions coming!

  • Ky was really gassy.  We had some success w/ Colic Calm.  The only bad thing about it is that it's black and will stain clothes.
  • yeah, I've read that it stains...the gas is worst at night though so I'm thinking of using it at bedtime and I don't care if his pajamas get stained!  Glad to hear you had success, Trina!   How often were you giving it to him?

  • Are you sure that it is Gas keeping him up, and not the 4 month wakeful period?    I would work lots of farts out of holden for about an hour before we would put him to bed when he was younger.   It helped him sleep longer, and it was fun =)

  • Well I think it might be a combination of both...but he's had a week of really bad gas...HUGE farts and burps...unfortunately I've never had success with bicycling his legs...or any other attempt at getting the gas out... Last night seemed better thankfully...he woke every 2 hours but didn't seem to have the painful gas.

  • I can't remember what the bottle said..but we gave it to him every few hours or so.  We got one of those pacifiers that you can put it in and it's less messy that way.
