2nd Trimester

When can't I fly?

I want to go visit family in December.  My third tri starts in Jan.  Is it normal to fly that far into pregnancy?

Re: When can't I fly?

  • I will be flying the first week of my third tri. I was told its fine.

  • Most airlines won't let you fly after 28 weeks.
  • I'd double check with your OB and the airline (each airline has different rules and requirements) but that seems plenty early enough to me.

  • From what I just found online, as long as its less than a 4 hour flight, you can fly up to week 32 (assuming you have complications and such)
  • I'm flying home to Dallas @ 34weeks. My OB says that's the last week she'll let me fly. But it's thanksgiving and I'm not going to not go unless there are complications.

I should double check with the airline...

ETA - from the American Airlines FAQ:

A medical certificate is required if travel is within 4 weeks of the delivery date in a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy

For domestic flights under 5 hours, travel is not permitted within 7 days before and after the delivery date. If you should need to travel within 7 days before or after delivery, a medical certificate is required as well as clearance from our Special Assistance Coordinator.

For International travel or any flights over the water, travel is not advised within 30 days of the due date, unless the passenger is examined by an obstetrician within 48 hours of outbound departure and certified in writing as medically stable for flight. Travel within 10 days of the due date for International travel must have clearance from our Special Assistance Coordinators. Travel within 7 days after delivery requires clearance as well.

  • I flew to FL at 30 weeks and I was fine, and baby was fine. Just make sure you get an end seat!

I don't know where you're getting this from.  I flew well into the third trimester on different airlines with DS and never encountered a problem.  My OB will let me fly up until 36 weeks if there are no complications.

Here's an old link from Baby Center on policies -- you'll see that most airlines don't have restrictions until well into month 9.  https://www.babycenter.com/0_airline-policies-for-pregnant-travelers_6976.bc

  • Thanks so much!  There are some really good prices on tickets and I'd rather not wait to ask my doctor.  I have no idea how to get a hold of her unless we have an appt. and when I call all I get is a nurse.  The flight is a total of 5 hours which includes a 1 hour  layover so 4 hours in a plane.
  • Most airlines will let you fly up to 14 days before delivery. I'm flying at 28 and didn't think twice about it.

I just didn't tell them!  LOL  I flew 2 weeks before delivery and 2 days after when I went from San Diego to Vancouver, Canada to place my 1st for adoption.
  • Check with the airline.  Even if your OB is fine with it, the airline might say no.
