Re: POLL on the H1N1 Vaccine.

  • I was really not into the idea, and at my 20 wk appt my OB was still holding off on recommending it, so I wasn't planning on it. At my 24 wk appt she said she's now advising it, so I'm going along with whatever she says. Her asst. said the concern is that many of the pg women they're seeing getting it are having to be hospitalized (I don't think specifically through their practice, I think she's talking on a much larger scale) and they want to prevent serious complications. I was also wary of my 2 1/2 yo DD getting vaccinated but the pediatrician is recommending it as well.

  • If I can get the thimerasol free version, I will get it. HOnestly, it's just a like the regular flu shot, just a different strain. My OB said it would have been included in the reg. flu shot if they would have known sooner about the threat of H1n1.

And also, I'd rather get a shot that's been through some clinical trials, rather than getting the flu and having to take Tamiflu ...no studies to show the effect on pregnant women and babies.

  • I do not plan to get it. I think it is too new. Testing may have been completed on pregnant women, but that is not to say that the baby will not have some adverse effect from it years down the road. JMO.

  • Before yesterday my OB had not mentioned it. But at my appointment yesterday she said that she reccommends it. Not the live nasal spray vaccine but the dead shot vaccination that has yet to come out. Her office will get it in and will call me and give it to me at one of appointments.

  • Not getting it, my fiance agrees with my decision. I haven't had the regular flu shot in FOREVER and never got the flu, so I'm not gonig to start now. And as for the Swine Flue shot, we just found out about this "possible pandemic" in like the past year, and the vaccine just became available last week, there's no say what effect its is going to have on pregnant women and/or their babies in short or long term. I'm a firm believer in "If it aint broke, don't fix it."
  • Also, last I heard the nasal spray or whatever for Swine Flu isn't recommended for pregnant women, whats so different about the injection that is supposedly OK for us? I don't know how I feel about putting it straight into my bloodstream if its not OK for my nose, lungs and such.
  • for those of you who are against it, arent you afraid of the death toll or being in the hospital on a ventilator!!!!!????
  • I never get the seasonal flu vaccine and don't plan to get either the seasonal or H1N1 vaccine as of right now.  I plan on talking to my OB at my next visit to get her opinion on the matter (both flu vaccines) as well as doing more research on my own.

The flu mist (regular flu nasal spray) is not okay for pregnant women either. It has a live virus. The actual flu and swine flu shot is a dead virus.

    Oh, thank you. :)

  • My OB has recommended since my first appt.  I will be getting it as soon as the killed vaccine is available.  DH will also be getting it. I also hope that my daughter will get some of the immunities from me since she won't be able to get the vaccine right away.

  • I will be getting it (as i got the seasonal flu shot) to protect myself, my baby, DS and anyone else I am around who is immuno-compromised (my grandfather, for instance).
  • I am getting it.  My OB has recommended it.  DH and I have several family members who are in the medical field(doctors/nurses/pharmacists) and they all recommend it.  Plus, I'm a teacher and have already had a confirmed case of H1N1 in my classroom.  So, I'm even more paranoid than usual about flu season.
  • Getting it. I'm a nurse, so my risk of exposure is high. I am comfortable with the knowledge that the H1N1 vaccine is the same formula as the seasonal flu just with a different strain, as they are every year. The FDA didn't actually require the additional clinical trials. I like knowing that my baby will be covered for not only my pregnancy, but also the first six months of its life, Even if I didn't normally get the flu shot, I would be getting it while pregnant because it's not just for me. My husband will also be getting it. I feel completely comfortable getting both flu shots this year, and know that I am reducing the risk of me being on a ventilator for the beginning of my child's life.

  • I am definitely getting it. I have talked to my OB and done a lot of research, and it seems that there is little side effects (so far) compared to many pregnant women being hospitalized and dying if they get the actual flu.

Exactly this (emphasis added).  I couldn't say it better.  I have no problems with getting a thimersol free version of the regular flu shot, so I can't see a reason for me to have a problem with the H1N1 shot.

  • I think I am now.  It's manufactured the same exact way as the seasonal flu shot, it's just a different strain of virus they are using.  I got the regular flu shot so there is really no reason not to get the swine flu one.

Another reason to consider it is that your baby will be born with some resistance to the swine flu from you getting the shot.  I'd rather have my child protected.

Actually, neither flu vaccine (seasonal or swine) has been through clinical trials on pregnant women. (There are clinical trials underway for the swine flu vaccine, but results won't be available until sometime next summer/fall.) They're both Class C medications, just like Tamiflu.

That said, I do plan to get it. I'm a little worried about myself, due to my lowered immunity because of pregnancy, but my main concern is having a newborn in the house at the height of flu season. The baby will get some immunities from me if I get the vaccine while pregnant, and that makes me feel more comfortable.

  • I am going to get it. I have already gotten the regular flu shot. I work with small children so I am going to get it. The way I see it the benifits out way the things that people feel is wrong with it. Pregnat women have been getting the flu shot for years now and this shot is made the say way the regular ful shot it made.

  • no, I got the reg flu vax though.
  • Honestly, even if I was planning on getting it, I probably wouldn't have access to it.  For the H1N1 mist alone, Hawaii only got 3500 doses and most of them weren't for the general public.

This exactly ... I just got the seasonal shot today and plan on getting the H1N1 vaccine as soon as my doctor has it ...

  • H to the No! :)

There hasn't been enough research on it,  period. I don't take flu shots anyways, don't believe in them. And I def will not be taking one that hasn't been tested on pregnant women and the effects on their babies. I'm a bit worried that I could get it bc I do travel a lot but I'm making sure to be extra careful.

  • I'm getting it. It's made the same way they make the season flu vaccine, so it's not some new foreign process. Plus pregnant woman are in the highest risk group for H1N1. And I work in a pharmacy and have clinicals in a hospital.
  • I was planning on getting it per the recommendation of a family friend who's an infectious disease specialist and a very good friend who is a pediatrician... I asked my OB about it yesterday, and she said she doesn't even know if/when they will be available in our area. (just moved to Champaign-Urbana, IL, where the U of Illinois is, ~150,000 people). She said no shipments have arrived to the area (even the nasal spray) and there's already a lot of arguing about "who gets it"... even though she has a high-risk population (pg women), no one wants to "share" the vaccine. So who knows if it'll even be available to me anyway!

  • My doctor highly recommended both...so I am getting both.

  • After a lot of debating, I've decided to get it.  It's made the same way the seasonal flu shot is.  I just can't fathom the possibility of getting sick and being hospitalized.
