Cutting out dairy?

I've been looking into this, for me and my kids.. has anyone done it- and what foods do you use to replace the nutrients of milk and cheese, etc? And is life possible without cheese:)?

Re: Cutting out dairy?

  • My Grandma cut out dairy years ago.  I don't really know why, probably the fat reason.  There are a lot of soy products and rice/oat/almond milks out there.  I couldn't go on with out cheese.

Why are you going to do this?  Is there a dairy intolerance in your family?  The fats that dairy provide are essential for growing kids.  I wouldn't make any drastic changes with out talking it over with my Dr and/or a Dietician/Nutrionist.

  • DS is allergic to dairy, so I have to do this for him. I'd never choose it willingly though. It's kind of a pain. You'd be surprised how many foods contain whey.

  • Have you tried him on raw dairy?  Some kids who are allergic to pasteurized dairy can have raw dairy because it still contains the beneficial bacteria in it that our bodies need to digest the proteins.

  • I have not had milk for 15 years now .  I never drank it, nor put it in my cereal; however, I used to eat a lot of yogurt (smoothies in the am + husband is Indian) + cheese (on salads, on sandwiches, pizza, etc.)  As per the advice of my naturopath, I have limited my intake and it lessened my digestive issues quickly.  I would say double check regarding your kids.  Soy has mixed results, so I would be careful there.  I take a multi and it has served me well, along with tons of fruits, veggies, + whole grains.
  • I had to cut out diary when I was breastfeeding. Look for foods that are high in Calcium and Iron such as dark leafy veggies: broccoli and spinach, and drink fortified OJ..I noticed even with eating foods high in calcium and iron, I still needed a supplement.

  • I've been hearing a lot about this lately... out of curiosity, what do doctors say is the reason for cutting out dairy?

  • maybe try goat milk. kids usually do better on it & it's easier on the digestive track. i'm allergic to cow milk, but not goat. it's actually really good too!!!
